Shoscombe Church School was founded in 1866 and over the years has been extended and improved to become a unique and attractive building which caters for the needs of the children in the local community.
It is situated in picturesque surroundings which offer opportunities for environmental and local studies. The grounds are attractive, including adventure play equipment, a sports pitch, a Quiet or Performance Garden and tarmacked area. We have an extensive forest school area where children from every class take part in regular forest school sessions. Our resident chickens live in our forest school area and provide eggs for class cooking lessons.
Within the main school building the school houses St Julian’s Church which forms the chancel in our school hall. This provides a real link with our village community who worship here during the winter whilst also providing a focal point in Collective Worship.
Our youngest children have a brand new classroom, built in the style of the Victorian building but benefiting from bi-folding doors that lead directly into their outdoor learning area. In September 2018 this area was completely refitted with bespoke early years learning equipment which has transformed and enhanced their outdoor learning experiences. In September 2019 we opened a nursery class within an Early Years Foundation Stage Unit in this classroom. This is open to children aged 3 years+.
Our children range in age from 4 to 11 and come from Shoscombe, Peasedown St John and other neighbouring villages. We have four classes, and each class has a teaching assistant to aid learning. The school has a hall with facilities for creating a stage for drama productions as well as being available for PE lessons. There is an extensive library containing both fiction and non-fiction titles and where the children work both in groups and independently as part of their weekly library session. Each classroom, the hall and the library have interactive whiteboards and all classrooms have visualisers.
We also have a small room separate from the main building which is known as ‘The Ink Room’. Here, adults will often work with small groups and peripatetic music teachers lead music lessons.
The Midsomer Norton Schools' Partnership was founded in 2009 following the hard federation between Norton Hill and Somervale Secondary Schools.
