About Us

At South Wigston High School, we pride ourselves on ensuring that our students are not only academically successful, but are also able to thrive through the support of a strong and well-structured pastoral system which focuses on developing curious, responsible and employable young people.

We want to develop excellent relationships with our families based on mutual respect and inclusivity. Communication is a vital part of that and to this end we publish a regular newsletter and use social media

to share news and events, and to celebrate the many successes of our students. We also use text messages and emails to keep parents/ carers updated with a wider range of information related to their children and the school. We would encourage you to use your child's form tutor as a first point of contact should you wish to discuss any aspect of your child's progress in school.

At South Wigston High School we are committed to offering an inclusive education to ensure the best possible progress for all of our students whatever their needs or abilities. Our pastoral hub manages a wide range of interventions that occur both in and outside the classroom and involve our staff and external agencies. Whether students have a learning need, are struggling with attendance or their mental health, the hub provides the support that they need. Much of our SEND support occurs in the classroom, with a focus on providing students with the tools to be independent in their lessons. Some of our SEND support is in the form of small group teaching in our Learning Development building where our highly experienced team deliver interventions ranging from phonics and literacy to social and emotional support. Relationships with students are really important to us, from the crucial relationship with the form tutor to the excellent relationships our pastoral support team build with our students.

Overview

SWHS_15.jpg

Student learning is at the heart of everything we do, and we offer a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum where academic achievement is a key priority. Additionally though, there is a thriving enrichment programme where students get to try new interests, or practice and hone existing talents. We hope that as you read this website, you will get a sense of our values, expectations and passion to ensure that all students achieve success.

The school's curriculum is designed to give them the knowledge and cultural capital they need to thrive in the world. There are new and exciting courses being offered from 2022 onwards which include a wider range of vocational options and a focus on enterprise education.

Achieving great examination outcomes is important to enable young people to pursue their aspirations, but we know school life is about so much more than certificates and qualifications. This is why we place just as much emphasis on our pastoral care and support for young people, so they are also able to flourish and succeed during their education.

Education at our Heart

SWHS_1052.jpg

At South Wigston High School, we care deeply about the education on offer to our students.

We believe that students should be taught exciting lessons which are both engaging and filled with enthusiasm. We aim to offer a broad and balanced curriculum. Students will experience a range of subjects and opportunities, where an emphasis is placed on the development of knowledge, balanced with key skills. We have a strong traditional academic offer, which is becoming ever more balanced with specific vocational and alternative courses, to offer a bespoke personalised pathway which allows all to flourish.

Our curriculum is designed to be a continuation from KS2 to the end of KS4 and we work closely with our three partner primary schools, Glen Hills, Parklands and Fairfield, in the Fosse Learning Alliance to ensure this.

Our curriculum aims to create lifelong learners who will be resilient, open-minded, aspirational, reflective and who will, not only be prepared for their final examinations at KS4, but also be ready to take on the challenges in life beyond South Wigston High School. The curriculum is constantly reviewed and developed to not only meet the needs and strengths of our students, but to also provide rich opportunities for them to develop a range of skills and enjoy memorable school experiences.

As a school our core function is to educate, and this extends beyond the classroom and the school gates. We are committed to learning which equips students for the rest of their lives.
