We are looking for a talented and hard-working individual to join us as Curriculum Leader: Mathematics.

St John Baptist CiW High School (“St John’s”) is an 11-18 co-educational comprehensive with approximately 1000 pupils, which includes over 200 sixth formers. Located in Aberdare, the school boasts extensive playing fields and is adjacent to the Dare Valley Country Park. Unashamedly a faith school, our distinctive Christian ethos is at the heart of the life at St John’s. Local clergy, who are regular visitors to the school, play an active role in the spiritual life at St John’s.

Our standards of achievement consistently high, with pupils achieving very well compared to local and national comparators. However, whilst the school is proud of its academic achievements, significant emphasis is placed on the formation of the ‘whole-person’. As such, a wide range of course and extra-curricular opportunities at St John’s supports pupils to develop their skills in creative and expressive arts, languages, and sport. One of the many strengths at St John’s is the strong relationships between pupils and staff. These effective working relationships helps make St John’s a great place to work and learn. The pupils, as you will see for yourself should you visit, are happy, articulate, and hard-working. They are a genuine asset to our school family and are, on the whole, an absolute delight to work with! In addition, we are fortunate to have a talent and exceptionally hard-working group of teaching and support staff. Adults who work at St John’s work tirelessly to ensure pupils have the best possible start in life by providing the highest-quality secondary school experience.

About the department and role
The role has become available as the previous post-holder was promoted to Assistant Headship in a school within a neighbouring local authority. As a result, there are temporary arrangements in place for the autumn term. Outcomes in public examinations are consistently strong. In 2024, 18% achieved A*A in GCSE mathematics, with 72% at A*C. Performance in GCSE Numeracy is of a similar standard, with 16% A*A and 71% A*C. 99% of pupils achieved, at least, an A*G grade. There are six-qualified mathematics specialists who make up the department. The team is located within its own section of the school and is equipped with the necessary technology to support high-quality learning. The role would suit an experienced mathematician seeking their first departmental leadership role, or an experienced subject leader of mathematics who is looking for a fresh challenge in a forward-thinking school.

Deadline: 12.00pm on 14th October 2024;
Shortlist: 15th October 2024;
Interview(s): Week commencing 21st October 2024; and
Start date: 1st January 2025.
