About Us

St. Philomena's has over 1248 pupils on roll and is a thriving technology college with highly motivated pupils and staff, and a reputation for excellence. DfES Achievement Awards 2001 and 2002 in recognition of the high levels of pupil learning and exam success: GCSE 84% A*-C A Level average points 254. The school is situated in twenty-five acres of beautiful parkland and in buildings which include a refurbished Queen Anne Mansion.

Since its foundation, the school has given its pupils every opportunity to develop spiritually, intellectually and socially in the context of a Catholic community which is forward looking while maintaining all that is best of traditional values.

Overview

Founded by the Daughters of the Cross in 1893 and set in 25 acres of parkland, St Philomena's offers exceptional education to girls and young women aged 11 to 18 years (Ofsted 2008). At St Philomena's we have a clear, distinctive Catholic ethos that helps our students to feel completely secure and this brings with it a sense of shared ownership in the school.

Our students are inquisitive, open to new ideas, hungry to learn and aware of their responsibilities to others and to the world in which they live. We are rightly very proud of our academic record, the students and their achievements. We actively encourage our students to take a lead role in their education, develop their learning whilst maturing into confident, resilient, resourceful young women able to face any challenge.

Women of faith

At the heart of St Philomena’s is our shared Catholic faith. We incorporate worship and reflection into the daily lives of students and staff to ensure that Christ remains the foundation of our community.

St Philomena's School was first established in 1893, when the Daughters of the Cross of Liège purchased Carshalton House. This congregation was founded by Blessed Marie Thérèse Haze. St Philomena's has Christ at its foundation which can be seen throughout all aspects of school life and reflected in our School mission:

Psalm 127: ‘Unless the Lord build the house, they labour in vain who build it’.

The Chapel, with the Blessed Sacrament, is open and a welcome place for students to attend throughout the day and the Chaplaincy Room is also open from 8am - 4pm. Both areas offer students a place set apart for reflection and spiritual direction or counselling from the school’s Chaplain Deacon Errol Quagraine.

Our Catholic identity permeates all aspects of our daily school life, daily prayers are prayed by each Form Tutor group and every Year group has an opportunity for collective worship in the form of an assembly weekly.
