We have an exciting opportunity for a passionate, dedicated, and innovative Head of Business and Computing to join our Business and Computing Faculty at Howard of Effingham School. We are looking for a creative, committed and determined leader to continue to support their colleagues and our students in securing the best possible outcomes. You will be expected to have strong subject knowledge and be up to date with current education pedagogy, showing an ability to innovate and implement new ideas.

Teaching and Learning is at the heart of everything we do at the Howard, and we prioritise planning time for teachers with 16% PPA compared with the 10% national average. The Howard is a place where you really do have the space to teach, and we encourage colleagues to try new things, take risks, and have fun in the classroom. Our teachers are encouraged to be themselves whilst reflecting on the latest developments in pedagogy and how they can be applied. Central to our ethos are the positive relationships and personalised approach which we take with all our students.

The Business and Computing faculty is comprised of two departments, each containing experienced and supportive teams of teachers, who strive to give students an understanding and love for their subjects.

Across the faculty a wide range of courses are offered for students to take.

In Business at Key Stage 4 we offer OCR GCSE Business, BTEC Travel & Tourism and BTEC Health and Social Care. Whilst at Key Stage 5 students can study A Level Business (AQA), A Level Economics (Edexcel) and BTECs in Business and Travel & Tourism. All of these courses are popular with high numbers of students enrolled. Currently we have four GCSE Business classes in each of Year 10 and 11 and students’ enjoyment of the course means that many go on to study courses in the faculty in the Sixth Form and beyond. Whether students continue to study business courses after GCSE and A Level, the faculty aims to provide them with a better understanding of the subject and how this affects the world around them.

The school has a fully inclusive approach to students studying Computing with all students studying computing at Key Stage 3 and this leads to strong uptake of students on both the OCR GCSE and A level Computing courses. Many of whom progress to degree courses in computing or related subjects. Programming is at the core of our computing curriculum and students learn to code using Python from Year 7. This stands them in good stead if they choose to continue studying computing in KS4 or 5, but also develops a wide range of analytical and creative skills.

To inspire interest in these subjects, there are also a range of opportunities for students to engage in extracurricular activities run by the faculty, for example the ‘Young Apprentice’ and ‘Student Investor Challenge’ in business and STEM and coding clubs in computing.

As well as dedicated teaching rooms for business, there are 5 IT suites for computing lessons and to allow teachers to enrich the business curriculum, encouraging students to research beyond what is part of the business syllabus.

As a Howard teacher, you will be fully supported both within the faculty and by the senior leadership team. Our outstanding staff and students make us a great place to work, and you will find plenty of opportunities to socialise and get to know your new colleagues. When you join us, you will gain access to our extensive CPD programme and be well supported in achieving a realistic work/life balance.
