An opportunity has arisen at William Hulme’s Grammar School (WHGS) for an outstanding English Teacher to join the English Faculty in the Secondary Phase. WHGS is a well-established 3-18 Academy and is one of the most over-subscribed schools in Greater Manchester with a long and distinguished history. It has a very inclusive and diverse community with over 40 languages spoken and our school is truly representative of Manchester’s rich multi-cultural heritage. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and particularly those committed to diversity and inclusion.

The school has over 1600 pupils in total and over 200 members of staff. The Academy has a relatively new Sixth Form Centre which in 2018 marked the completion of a huge expansion project. Inspectors judged the school to be Good in all phases in its most recent inspection, May 2019.

You will be responsible for teaching English at Key Stages 3 and 4, with the possibility of KS5. You will be an exceptional teacher, delivering consistently good and outstanding lessons, an excellent team player with the highest standards of professionalism and expectations of students. You will have up to date subject knowledge and a track record of success in maximising student progress across all key stages. We welcome applications from ECTs.

As well as being an enthusiastic teacher who is passionate about the teaching of English, you will also need to demonstrate a commitment to the extra-curricular life of the school.

William Hulme's Grammar School is Greater Manchester’s second most over-subscribed school and one of the most successful comprehensive schools in the country. It is an all-through (3-18) Academy of over 1500 pupils with a wide range of abilities, ethnicities and backgrounds and is part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.

United Learning schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resources, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.

We are working hard to become a more diverse organisation – which is key to our commitment to bringing out the best in everyone. We welcome applications from everyone committed to this ethos and would particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in the Group as a whole. We always appoint on merit. We are open to discussing flexible working options.
