Some of our NQT’s told what they thought of their first year at Cardinal Wiseman and described the benefit of the support they have received. This is what they said:
One of the first things that struck me about Cardinal Wiseman at interview was how friendly and approachable all the staff seemed to be, from Jackie on the front desk in reception right they way through to SLT. That is something that I've continued to appreciate this year as an NQT at the school. There is no intimidating 'them' and 'us' divide between more experienced teachers and NQTs and new staff at Wiseman are made to feel a part of the school from day one.
NQTs at Cardinal Wiseman are given a lot of responsibility early on, but are extremely well supported. My department has been fantastic and the more experienced members of the department have been very patient with the many questions they are asked on a daily basis by their three NQTs! Having several other NQTs at the school has been great as we have been able to bounce ideas off each other and share the highs and lows of the first year of teaching, as well as getting together socially. My mentor has been really supportive and has gone out of her way to help me develop as a teacher both during our weekly mentor meetings and as questions and problems arise during the course of day to day teaching.
The Induction programme is great and is a very non judgemental environment to bring up the questions that you may feel too silly to ask anywhere else! It gives an excellent insight into the expectations of the school, and how I as a new teacher can achieve these.
All the Cardinal Wiseman staff have been so supportive in my first term and have made me feel really welcome. The NQT programme could not have been more accessible or more informative.
As far as I am concerned the Induction program has been really useful to me as it has helped me understand the schools policies a lot more than actually reading them as well as the effective learner session being very useful - the booklet containing ideas for plenaries and starters has been very useful and I have tried and analysed how successful some of these worked with different classes.
