Are you looking to make a difference to the education sector by joining an academy trust board? The Woodard Academies Trust serves very diverse communities extending from the North East to the South Coast and seeks two non-executives/directors, with either a commercial background or senior leadership experience within higher education to join its board.
The Board of Trustees has three core roles:
- ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
- holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of schools and pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
- overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.
We are seeking two trustees to strengthen further the work of the Board by bringing new perspectives and expertise. Our new strategy prioritises improving schools and pupil outcomes through a stronger focus on attracting, recruiting, retaining and developing the best people who meet high professional standards and have uplifting, purposeful careers. We want to see continuous improvement in the quality of teaching and learning driven by effective leadership and collaborative professional development. We also want to raise expectations of all pupils for higher education and high-quality apprenticeships.
For both roles we would expect candidates to be operating at, or just below, Board level in their organisations; be skilled at working constructively with others as part of a collective Board; and understand how to act in a non-executive rather than executive role.
Role 1: Large Commercial Employer
We are seeking a senior leader in a large commercial employer who is committed to the development and progression of young people, including through apprenticeships. This perspective and expertise would support the Board in supplementing the important focus on qualification results with ensuring pupils understand and are well-prepared for a wide range of workplaces and careers and committed to further development and progression throughout their life.
Role 2: Senior Leader in Higher Education
We are seeking a senior leader in higher education with expertise in developing partnerships in the education sector to promote continuing professional development and build research capability. Our aim is for everyone in the Trust to be learning, developing and improving and, over time, to have the capacity to deliver professional development and undertake research.
The time commitment will be 3-4 hours per month. There will be 6 Board meetings per year at which attendance is expected, trustees will want to visit some of the schools.
Board Meetings are usually held at our Adam Street office, although due to Covid-19 restrictions, meetings are currently held remotely via Zoom and it is anticipated that this model will continue for the foreseeable future.

As a key member of the board, you will support the trust in achieving the following over the next 12 – 24 months:
- Improve Pupil Outcomes – To improve pupil outcomes by implementing the Trust’s strategy of driving school improvement with its focus on working collaboratively to improve leadership and the quality of teaching and learning.
- Improve Efficiency - To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Trust’s shared services e.g., finance, procurement, integrating systems to maximise use of its resources for teaching and learning.
- Recruitment and Retention- To develop a People Strategy so that the trust attracts, recruits, develops and retains the best employees, and a marketing strategy to attract and retain pupils in schools operating below capacity.
A key priority for the Trust is ensuring that all pupils, regardless of background or where they go to school, aim high and have equal access to a high-quality education which equips them with the knowledge, skills and understanding to realise their ambitions.
The post is unpaid, although travel costs can be claimed in line with Trust policies. The Term of Office is three years, with the option of a second term.
