Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – SEND

Woodfield Education Centre | Redhill

Permanent | Term time only | Part-time, with full-time applications also considered

Salary: Surrey Pay Grade S7, £34,660–£36,943 full-time equivalent per annum, pro rata for part-time and term-time working.

Working hours and days: To be agreed.

Bring your HLTA experience to a specialist setting where you can help young people with SEND build confidence, develop independence and succeed in their learning.

Woodfield School is looking for a skilled and enthusiastic Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join Woodfield Education Centre (WEC), our specialist satellite provision for secondary-aged pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.

Our pupils have a range of learning and additional needs, including Moderate Learning Difficulties and co-occurring needs. WEC offers a smaller, supportive learning environment focused on helping pupils prepare for adulthood.

Your role

You will work closely with teachers and teaching assistants to support pupils’ learning and lead planned activities, interventions and lessons within the agreed responsibilities of the HLTA role.

You will:

  • support individuals, small groups and whole classes;
  • adapt activities and resources to make learning accessible and engaging;
  • help pupils develop communication, confidence and independence;
  • support positive behaviour and help pupils remain engaged in learning;
  • contribute to assessment and share clear feedback on pupils’ progress; and
  • work flexibly across the provision to meet pupils’ needs.

Safeguarding is central to this role. You will be expected to maintain professional boundaries, recognise and report concerns promptly, and follow the school’s safeguarding policies and procedures.

About you

You will hold recognised HLTA status or an appropriate HLTA qualification and have experience supporting children or young people in an educational setting.

We are looking for someone who:

  • is confident leading learning and supporting pupils with different needs;
  • understands SEND and the barriers pupils may experience;
  • has strong literacy, numeracy and communication skills;
  • builds positive, professional relationships with pupils and colleagues;
  • responds calmly and constructively to challenges; and
  • works collaboratively and adapts to changing priorities.

Experience in a specialist SEND setting would be advantageous. We also welcome applications from qualified HLTAs in mainstream settings who can demonstrate relevant skills and an understanding of SEND.

Why join WEC?

This role offers the opportunity to use your HLTA skills in a smaller specialist provision, working closely with colleagues and helping young people make meaningful progress in their learning and everyday independence.

We welcome applications for part-time working. Full-time working may also be considered.

How to apply

Please apply through Eteach using the application form and explain how your experience meets the job description and person specification. CVs alone will not be accepted.

Closing date: 31 October 2026

Start date: ASAP
