Teacher of Art

Required for September 2025

Full Time/Part Time Considered (minimum 0.8)

MPS/UPS

Are you an artistic visionary – someone who sees art education as a contemporary, critical, and inspiring practice. Someone who leads with imagination and purpose. Someone who believes art is more than a subject it's a way to challenge the world, spark curiosity, and empower change.

We are looking for an inspirational and energetic teacher of art who is confident, creative and committed to raising expectations and attainment for our young artists. Whether you're an experienced teacher or an NQT, we welcome those who are passionate about nurturing the next generation of artists, activists, and critical thinkers.

This role is for those that:

  • Embrace contemporary art practices and critical theory as tools to challenge and expand young creative minds.
  • See their classroom as a site of experimentation, reflection and transformation.
  • Embed innovative practical approaches and contemporary art theory in their teaching
  • Encourage students to take ownership of their learning - questioning convention, solving problems, and creating meaningful work.
  • Believe in cultivating individuality and fostering diverse creative voices.

The vibrant and ambitious Art & Design department at Writhlington School is a stimulating centre of excellence, where students are challenged to explore, reflect, and produce truly individual work. We believe art provides a vital form of communication in a complex world and we design learning experiences that provoke deep thinking and creative freedom. Our curriculum looks at cultural, traditional, and contemporary practices to provide creative depth and global perspective. As part of this team you will:

  • Join a collaborative and forward-thinking team of creative educators who teach across all art specialisms
  • Develop and deliver a curriculum grounded in contemporary artistic discourse - inclusive, diverse and deeply relevant to the world students inhabit.
  • Encourage conceptual thinking, risk-taking, and interdisciplinary exploration.
  • Champion a classroom culture where process is celebrated as a product, and students are invited to interrogate, imagine and innovate.
  • Be part of a department that values wonder, mystery, and discovery as central to artistic development.

Writhlington School is a good school with a strong reputation of putting the needs of our students at the heart of what we do. Recent academic outcomes have been strong and competitive, indicating excellence in teaching and learning. This also reflects our strength in relation to pastoral care as excellent outcomes are an indicator of happy, healthy and safe students.

The school values of Respect, Resilience, Ambition, Kindness, Confidence and Success enable our students to develop as future leaders in the community and further afield. Our consistent expectations on behaviour, attendance and the wish for our students to be ambassadors for our school are all driven through our values.

Writhlington School benefits from a well-resourced, large, and modern purpose built campus with exceptional facilities to support artistic development.

We offer both staff and students opportunities to get involved outside the classroom through a wide and varied range of extra-curricular activities, including a Combined Cadet Force, our world famous Orchid club, trips to Rome, Iceland, France, Belgium and many other trip and activities. Please see our website for more information.

We are proud to be part of Midsomer Norton Schools’ Partnership and you will work alongside the Lead Art Coordinator across the Trust.
