Salesian School is seeking to appoint an exceptional individual to work in the Maths Department on either a placement year or somebody who is looking for a career change into teaching. The Mathematics Department at Salesian

We are a dedicated and passionate team who take great pride in working hard to ensure that every student reaches their full potential and genuinely enjoys their Maths lessons. Our large team comprises colleagues with diverse experience, ranging from interns, trainee teachers, and Early Career Teachers (ECTs) to those who have been part of the department for over 25 years. The positive energy and enthusiastic approach of our staff foster a fantastic team environment—you’ll truly enjoy being part of a group that supports each other like family.

We are exceptionally proud of our students' achievements and remain committed to continuous improvement year on year. In 2024, our Year 11 students accomplished outstanding results, with 93% attaining grades 9-4 and 44% achieving grades 9-7 at GCSE, including an impressive 20 grade 9s. Their overall Progress 8 score was +0.76. Maths is also one of the most popular subjects at our Sixth Form, with over 170 students currently studying across Years 12 and 13. In 2024, 76% of our A-Level students achieved grades A*-C, with 32% securing grades A*-A, and many went on to study Mathematics related degrees at university.

Our department plays a leading role within the North-East Hants and Surrey MathsHub and contributes to the development of undergraduate interns and School-Centred Initial Teacher Trainees (SCITTs) annually. Additionally, we are deeply engaged in the co-curricular life of the school, running clubs each evening and organising an annual Year 7 residential Maths trip. Opportunities such as the UKMT and MathsFeast are just two examples of the many enriching activities we offer our students. With the College continuing to grow, there are exciting opportunities also at Key Stage 5.

The mathematics internship is ideal for anyone undertaking a placement year as part of their university course, a recent graduate, or someone considering a career change into teaching. This internship immerses you fully into the Maths department at Salesian and the broader school community. The role is highly flexible and often evolves throughout the academic year, with responsibilities tailored to your experience and aspirations. Three former interns are now teaching within the department, highlighting how well this internship prepares you for a future teaching career, should you choose to pursue one.

• Currently studying for or have successfully completed a degree, ideally in Mathematics or a related subject.

Responsibilities

As a Mathematics Intern, your initial responsibilities would include the following, with opportunities for the role to be adapted and expanded based on your experience and development:

• Provide tailored support to students during Maths lessons, offering both challenges to extend their learning and scaffolding to aid understanding.
• Plan and deliver engaging lessons to individual students and small groups, ensuring personalised attention and targeted support.
• Lead intervention groups aimed at preparing students for examinations and improving their confidence with challenging topics.
• Assist Key Stage Leads in creating effective revision resources, assessments, and lesson plans.
• Collaborate with Mathematics teachers to prepare materials and resources for class activities and student use.
• Design and maintain visually appealing display materials for the department, creating a welcoming and inspiring classroom environment.
• Take charge of organising and managing department resources.
• Actively contribute to the co-curricular life of the school, by assisting or leading clubs, supporting school trips, and proposing innovative ideas for student engagement.
