Thank you for your interest in Park Community School. We are a school in which OFSTED have recognised (March 2001) that all staff are committed to the best interest of pupils. Park Community School is a well-established 11 – 16 Comprehensive School with 858 students on roll. The LEA described the school's GCSE results in 2001 as "truly remarkable" and in 2003 as "fantastic"; an "astonishing triumph" was the verdict of the Portsmouth Evening News. These results placed the school among the top 10 most improved schools in the country (2000-2003). The school adds very significant value by the end of Key Stage 4.The school has some excellent facilities such as a purpose built library resource centre, a fully equipped performing arts theatre seating 130, extensive grounds for sporting activities and excellent IT facilities. An outdoor hard surface Multi-Use Games Area is soon to be built. A Media Centre (Digital TV studio, Radio Station and Recording studio) and Dance Studio were completed this year. ENABLING LEARNINGWorking closely with their tutors in a planned programme of tutor activities, the five Heads of Year have overall responsibility for the academic guidance and personal welfare of pupils within their year. Pupils remain in the same tutor group as they move up the school. The tutor is the person who knows the pupil best. We have involved other pupils in the pastoral system by encouraging them to take more responsibility for younger ones, for example in hearing them read and in the School Council. All year groups are involved in target setting and working with their Records of Achievement. Most teachers in the school are tutors – this enables us to reduce the size of each group. A computerised pupil performance database is used to feedback regular teacher assessment. (At KS3 parents, teachers and tutors receive achievement data half termly in core subjects and termly in others; At KS4 half termly in most subjects.) A range of pupil mentoring takes place. Pupils record their targets in Study Booklets.ARTS TRADITIONThere is a strong Performing Arts tradition in the school with many pupils actively involved. This carries over into extra-curricular work. The Arts are a strong feature of our pupils’ school experience and also enrich their personal development, communication skills, basic skills (including teamwork) and employability. The school became a Specialist Arts School in September 2002 and works in partnership with Southern and South East Arts, Havant Borough Council, the Leigh Park Education Action Zone, the Local Education Authority, BBC South and Havant Arts Active. The school has achieved Artsmark Gold.WORKING WITH OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE AREAIn addition to in-service staff training planned jointly with a consortium of other secondary schools, Park Community School receives extra funding as a founder member of an EAZ (Education Action Zone). It is the only Headteacher–led zone in the country; we see it not as a “dash for cash” but as a framework to provide our community with improved educational opportunities as well as challenges to unlock the potential of our young people and the belief of their families, so that they can be freed to achieve. In January 2005, the school will be part of the Leigh Park Excellence Cluster. The school is also a founder member of the Havant Federation of Schools (6 secondary schools) who are committed to collaborative work 2003-2006 and receive extra DfES funding for this. The intake profile of the school is changing for the better. Last year almost 50% of year 7 joined us with L4 in English, 52% in Mathematics and 64% in Science.
