English as an Additional Language Learning Support Assistant (EAL LSA)
We are seeking an EAL LSA who can develop students’ English rapidly and effectively, so they can access learning independently at secondary school. We are looking for individuals who are able to take responsibility for assessing learners, working with their families to support integration and inclusion, deliver EAL interventions at all levels, from new to English and developing basic interpersonal communication skills, right through to enabling cognitive academic learning proficiency and access to the full school curriculum for learners so they can make accelerated progress.
An excellent EAL LSA can have a huge impact on young people. They are aware of a young person’s learning and pastoral needs, can listen to young people and find proactive ways through their concerns and difficulties to enable them to make good progress, raise self-esteem and help them enjoy their learning. LSAs are firm and fair, maintaining positive behaviours in intervention rooms and classrooms to ensure the best conditions for learning. EAL LSAs at Orchard School work one-to-one or with small groups of students mainly delivering interventions, but also support staff to understand a child’s language needs, and enable best differentiation in the subject so they can access high quality teaching and learning. On occasion, you may be needed to work in-class directly with teachers to enable identified students with EAL needs to access the learning as independently as possible.
The post would suit an individual with a CELTA/CTESOL/DELTA certificate, or someone who has learned English as an Additional Language and is fully bilingual, and who can understand how to teach English through development of speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation skills. We are particularly interested in LSAs who have excellent English and are able to speak community languages. We will provide any necessary CPD, and opportunities to grow to become the best practitioner you can be.
This is a 0.6 post, which means the equivalent of three days per week. These hours can be agreed at interview.
