Head of Careers
Responsible to: Senior Deputy Head Professional Development
Summary of the Role:
HMS is committed to providing a planned programme of careers education within the curriculum from Year 7 to Year 13. Schools are expected to provide young people with access to impartial careers advice and guidance. Schools and colleges should provide young people (and their parents/carers) with relevant information which is accessible and regularly updated.
The role of the Head of Careers is to take day-to-day responsibility for ensuring that all young people attending HMS receive effective Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) appropriate to their needs and which enables them to progress successfully through school and into further learning, training or employment.
This position requires the post-holder to hold the Post Graduate Diploma in Careers Guidance.
Under the guidance of the Senior Deputy Head Professional Development, the Head of Careers will coordinate a programme that includes careers education within the curriculum, access to careers information and to careers advice and guidance, and opportunities to experience the world of work.
The Head of Careers may also contribute to the delivery of the programme by e.g. teaching careers education and/or providing individual careers guidance. They will spend time liaising and jointly planning with other middle leaders in the school, supporting the work of other teachers and nonteaching staff, networking with a range of partners from the wider community (i.e. employers and higher education institutions) and working in partnership with external agencies.
