Head of Chemistry
Royal Russell is an HMC/IAPS co-educational school with over 1000 pupils between the ages of 3 and 18, situated on a beautiful, leafy campus of 110 acres in the Shirley Hills near Croydon. We have over 150 boarding students in the Senior School, and are proud of our day and boarding facilities that rank amongst the best in the South of England. Our pupils, parents and staff experience a warm and friendly environment with strong pastoral care for every pupil alongside a comprehensive co-curricular and enrichment programme. We aim to build on this - alongside sustained academic excellence - and continue to be the family school of choice in South London. The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) has recently judged the school as ‘excellent’ in all areas.
In the Summer Term of 2020, the department will move into new laboratories housed within an extension to the existing Science building.
Science is one of the strengths of the school, with students being taught individual sciences from Year 8 onwards. Science subjects are a popular A level choice, especially from amongst our Triple Science IGCSE groups and our overseas cohort. Typically each science has two classes per year in the Sixth Form, and applications for science degrees – including successful Oxbridge applications - are very popular. Each science has dedicated technician support in order to extend learning opportunities.
The Head of Chemistry will work alongside the Heads of Biology and Physics, the Year 7 Science Coordinator and a member of the Senior Management Team. This role requires experience and dynamism, teamwork and dedication, and someone who is able to build on the excellence already in place in order to take Chemistry to the next level within the school.
We would expect the successful candidate to possess outstanding subject knowledge and be able to teach confidently from Year 7 to Year 13, including Oxbridge and EPQ preparation, as appropriate.
A willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular programme and support the pastoral life of our school is essential.
The Royal Russell pay scale which is above SNS includes a generous allowance for suitably qualified and experienced staff. Allowances are available for specific pastoral and academic responsibilities.
We offer excellent benefits which include free lunch, free car parking, use of on-site tennis courts, gym and swimming pool. Staff are also entitled to 50% discount on School fees (pro-rata for part time/term time staff).
