Dorothy Goodman School is looking for committed Learning Support Assistants to achieve positive outcomes for children and young people with a range of Learning Difficulties. As an Area Special School with pupils aged 3 - 19 we need people who can support pupils to achieve academic success, develop life skills and increase independence.
We have posts available across the age range and recognise that this is an opportunity for those looking for further experience to develop their skills in preparation for careers in teaching, educational psychology or speech and language therapy.
There is a further opportunity for applicants who are interested in working closely as part of a core team of 3:1 staff who support the learning and development of a pupil who has communication and interaction needs, severe learning difficulties and associated challenging behaviours. The successful applicant must be committed to educating children and young people with a wide range of learning needs including those with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties, Severe Learning difficulties, Moderate Difficulties and those with Autism (who may be functioning at high levels academically). High expectations of what all our pupils can achieve are essential.
At our school, individual differences are recognised and respected but are never seen as a barrier to achievement. By adapting the curriculum and teaching methods we ensure that our pupils have every opportunity to succeed both academically and socially. We also work with young people who have significant challenging behaviour and with those who have severe medical needs, and so candidates need to be prepared to adopt a problem-solving approach to the challenges that those young people bring. As an Area Special School we must be able to meet the range of needs within our local area, and to this end, we must be prepared to constantly examine and adapt our practice.
We have a great deal of specialist expertise and experience at our school. Therefore, we are able to offer induction, support and training to newly-appointed staff. What is important to us is commitment to our overall ethos and approach. Successful candidates must be willing to undertake training as required for the role.
We work in multi-skilled teams so good teamwork is essential. All staff have responsibility for ensuring the personal care needs of learners are met.
We operate currently across seven sites, and all staff are appointed to the school as a whole.
The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and subject to a check being carried out at an Enhanced level by the Disclosure and Barring Service regarding any previous criminal record.
