About Us

HOLLY LODGE PRIMARY SCHOOLHolly Lodge opened formally in September 1971 and a year later became a middle school. In September 1993, Holly Lodge became a primary school admitting children from 4 – 11 years.

The extensive school grounds provide an attractive rural setting and offer excellent facilities for outdoor activities. The buildings are modern, spacious and well equipped. There are twelve classrooms and an assembly hall in the main building, with three separate ‘mobile classrooms’ and a library. There is also an ‘M1 Unit’ – containing three classrooms with cloakroom facilities for boys and girls. There are seven year groups in the school.

The infant classes: Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, are grouped according to age. In the junior part of the school there are four year groups; each year group is divided into two or three classes and each has a class teacher. In each section of the school, Infant Lower and Upper Junior, one member of staff is responsible for the co-ordination of the curriculum and pastoral care of the children. The classes are of mixed ability, except for the teaching of mathematics in the upper school where there is a system of ‘setting’ in which children are placed in groups appropriate to their needs.

It is the policy, wherever possible, that class sizes should not exceed thirty. The younger children spend most of their time with their own teacher. There is some exchanging of classes for the older children to enable them to experience certain subjects at a more specialised level. A greater amount of subject specialisation is introduced in the upper school, although children still spend a large amount of time working in the care of their class teacher.

In addition to whole-class teaching, children may work as individuals or within a small group, where appropriate. Small groups of children may be withdrawn from class to receive extra help with special education needs where this is felt to be appropriate.

There is a strong tradition of music at Holly Lodge. In addition to normal class musical activities, children have the opportunity to learn to play string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments with visiting peripatetic music teachers. Children also have the opportunity to join the school choir and orchestra and take part in public performances, which have recently included: The Ash Schools’ Music Festival, the Farnham Schools’ Music Festival and St Mary’s Church Flower Festival. Children also perform at Harvest Festivals, Christmas Concerts, School Fetes and on Open Days. The prevailing ethos is one of care and courtesy and the school is a happy place for children and staff alike. The school has well-motivated children and supportive parents who are appreciative of what the school provides. The staff work well as a team are hardworking and committed to their jobs.
