Welcome to Queen Elizabeth’s Academy or QE, as it is often affectionately known. My name is Rupert Poole and, in September 2014, I became Principal of Queen Elizabeth’s, having worked in various roles at the school since 1998, first as a teacher of Humanities and, most recently, as Vice Principal with responsibility for teaching and learning. In January 2014 Ofsted judged the school to be 'Good' in all respects, with an 'Outstanding' Sixth Form. Whilst we are delighted with the Ofsted reports and exam results, we believe that schools are about so much more than merely results and Ofsted. A child’s education has to be rich and varied, and we will not allow league tables to squeeze out subjects and activities such as expressive arts and technology. We have a diverse and vibrant range of co-curricular activities, from the most fabulous theatre productions, art and music to sporting excellence and an extensive outdoor education programme that includes preparing students for the gruelling Ten Tors. I am particularly proud of the fact that so many of our students participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, with expeditions taking our students to the furthest corners of the earth.
Queen Elizabeth’s is a school with a proud history stretching back over four hundred and sixty years, originally as a grammar school, then as a boarding grammar for boys and girls, and now as the only state boarding school in Devon. We are a large school with around fourteen hundred students, nearly three hundred of whom are in the Sixth Form. Despite our size, we are known for our friendly and approachable atmosphere. We have two separate sites, or campuses. The Barnfield campus, with its beautiful grounds and views right across the hills to Dartmoor, houses Years 7 and 8 away from the rest of the school and allows the younger students to thrive. The Western Road site houses Years 9, 10 and 11 and includes College House, which is our Sixth Form centre. Our two boarding houses are also located there.
We care passionately about each student as a unique individual and do our utmost to ensure they make outstanding progress in all aspects of their education.
