Newham Sixth Form College (NewVIc) opened in 1992. Since then the college has grown rapidly and in August 2000 we recruited over 2000 students on a range of vocational and academic programmes. The college is financially secure, and has category A financial status. The college offers a broad and inclusive curriculum. We have large and successful programmes in both A-levels and vocational courses, and are working to take full advantage of the possibilities opened up by curriculum 2000. As a college we emphasise the importance of strong tutoring and key skills for our students. All full-time teachers are also personal tutors, and all teachers are responsible for ensuring the relevant skills development of their students. We have good - and still improving - retention and achievement. The college is committed to inclusive learning. We are developing expertise as a centre for students with visual impairment and now hearing impairment. The college has a high degree of accessibility for students with physical difficulties. We offer provision for students with learning disabilities, most of whom are integrated into mainstream programmes.

We offer programmes at two levels for EAL (English as an additional language) students. The college was inspected by the FEFC in March 2000. All but one of the grades awarded in our self-assessment were validated by the inspectors. The college received grade ones for art, design and media, support for students, general resources, quality assurance and management. Grade twos were given for mathematics, computing and IT, business and humanities. Daytime provision focuses on 16 - 19 year olds, but there is some daytime access for adults to the Learning Resources Centre and a lively evening programme that also caters for this client group. In addition the college provides customised training for industry through the business support unit and all college staff are encouraged to become involved in these developments. The college has recently opened a second site in Stratford specialising in courses and support for adults and businesses.

NewVIc offers a friendly, welcoming environment and outstanding support, for all its students. Our staff offer dedicated support to ensure students feel encouraged, inspired and able to achieve their personal goals. Over 700 NewVIc students’ progress to courses at university each year, this is far above the average for sixth form colleges. NewVIc has seen an upward trend in the number of students securing places at the most competitive institutions including the Russell Group and 1994 Group of universities. We want all students to enjoy their time at NewVIc and achieve the best they can and be part of a diverse and vibrant student population.
