Backwell School has established over many years a reputation as one of Britain's best performing comprehensive schools at GCSE and A Level. Year on year our students do achieve very highly - in exams, on the sports field, in the Arts and in local and national arenas. In its last two inspections in 2008, and more recently in 2013, Ofsted judged both the School and the Sixth Form to be outstanding. Inspectors referred to the "can-do culture" that permeates the school and stated in June 2013 that "behaviour is exemplary" and that
"in this outstanding school, all groups thrive, achieve highly and are very well prepared for the next stage of their education".
Backwell is a popular school - Currently there are just over 1700 students on roll of whom 350 are in the Sixth Form. The planned admission number is 270 in Year 7.
Although we are a large school we focus on each individual child. We want every young person to be safe, happy, challenged and stimulated so they achieve the best in all they do. Backwell School has a strong reputation for Performing and Visual Arts, but our strengths are equally strong across all areas, including the core subjects of Maths, English and Science, as well as Sport and Foreign Languages. In addition students of all ages are offered a vast range of extra-curricular opportunities and new experiences. As well as enabling our young people to achieve academic success, we place a great importance on helping them to develop a strong sense of right and wrong and actively uphold the values of tolerance and mutual respect.
Backwell is a designated National Teaching School as a result of the very high standards of teaching in the school, and its focus on high quality professional development and is the leader of the North Somerset Teaching Alliance (NSTA).
In 2011, Backwell School became an Academy. The Governing Body, staff, parents and students worked together to create a Backwell School Charter that states the aims and principles of Backwell School and ensures that Backwell School remains a school at the heart of its community.
Backwell School has recently joined the Lighthouse School Partnership. This multi-academy trust (MAT) is based in the local area with the aim of providing children with a comprehensive 4-19 education pathway.
