Overview

Brookwood Primary School is four miles from Woking Town Centre, and serves the village of Brookwood and outlying areas including Pirbright Army Camp. The mainline station (Waterloo to Southampton line) is two minutes walk from the school. It is a 5-11 school with approximately 190 children on roll. Brookwood School has been considerably developed over the years. It has extensive grounds including playground, wooded area, playing field, allotment, pond and environmental classroom. Major building works over the last few years have provided us with a new hall and cloakroom areas, whilst adapting the existing building to resite offices, ICT Suite, library and resource areas. Brookwood and Pirbright Sure Start Children’s Centre and Blossom Montessori School share our site with new, purpose-built premises.

About Us

Brookwood Primary School is a friendly, welcoming, inclusive school judged Good by Ofsted in November 2015. With around 200 pupils on roll, we create a lively, stimulating and caring environment in which everyone is valued as an individual.  Our expectations are high, encouraging everyone to be the best they can be. At the heart of our school is a beautiful Edwardian building with many of its original features preserved.

This houses two classrooms and a range of offices and other teaching spaces – including a huge library.  This has been added to over the years with the latest addition being a beautiful purpose-built Sure Start Children’s Centre.  We have extensive, wooded grounds which include a wildlife pond, activity trails, sand pits, seating, a large sports field, a playground with netball court and an allotment.

The grounds have been developed by the Gardening/Eco-club to include wildlife friendly areas – with habitats created for insect houses.  We are developing Forest School capacity during 2016-17. The pupils in school mainly live either in Brookwood, nearby Knaphill or live in military housing attached to the Pirbright Camp.  This creates an enriching diversity of background, experience, outlook, language and ethnicity.

What all pupils have in common is that, once in school, they are Brookwood children and are fiercely proud of it! We are equally proud to have an Eco-School Green Flag which acknowledges our success at managing our buildings and grounds in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.  We also hold a Sing Up Gold Award reflecting our passion for music in school, an enhanced Healthy Schools Award and the prestigious Silver Sainsbury’s Schools Games Mark award.

Headteacher's Welcome

Choosing where to work is never easy – how do you choose the right school for you?  All schools in our area are well-equipped, staffed by enthusiastic teachers, teach their pupils all the required aspects of the curriculum and provide a safe environment.

But every school is different - you will feel that from the minute you walk into Brookwood School.  Our school has a family feel; partly because it is small in comparison with others in the local area, but equally because we work hard to make it that way.  We believe that school should be an integral part of the local community and that everyone should be welcome and comfortable here.  In this way the school, parents and children can all focus on achieving the best for each individual – including the staff who work here.

Ofsted judged Brookwood to be Good in November 2015.  They said that:  the quality of teaching is consistently good; pupils reach standards that are above average; work is precisely tailored to need; the curriculum is well planned with a wide range of enriching activities; all staff are positive about the support they receive and pupils enjoy school and behave well; and leaders are ambitious.

Brookwood is now ‘in the land of Good or better’ – a place where we are holding on to the effective practice we have developed over the years so we maintain standards, but where we are embarked on a range of new and exciting school development initiatives.  There are plans to utilise our beautiful grounds to operate as a Forest School and to adopt the International Primary Curriculum during 2016-17.  We have relaxed our timetable to give freedom and flexibility to teachers to organise learning to get the most from the pupils in their class.

Making the choice to join Brookwood would put you in this welcoming, ambitious, successful and innovative team.  If you are considering an application, you will be warmly welcome to visit to see our lovely school for yourself!

Learning at Brookwood

A distinguishing feature between different schools is how learning is organised within the school. At Brookwood we value all learning experiences which contribute positively to the rounded development and achievements of our pupils.  Everything we do is focused on improving pupils’ standards, their attitudes and behaviour and their attendance, to enable all our pupils to achieve their full potential.

We want every child to succeed academically and socially to the best of their ability.  We provide an inclusive education within a culture of high expectations, giving every learner confidence that they can succeed.  We find out what learners already know and build on it, structuring and pacing teaching so that pupils know what is to be learned, how and why.  We make learning vivid and real, making the learning experience challenging and enjoyable.  We teach pupils how to become active partners in their learning – teaching them how to learn.

Pupils in our classrooms know what is expected of them and can explain what they are doing.  They have individual targets which focus them on making the next vital step in their personal learning.  They work at a good pace, building their capacity to remain on task.  They are stretched and are motivated to learn, behave well and relate to others.  They are taught to be independent and to apply their skills to their learning. They are expected to co-operate and communicate well and to work well in different groupings.  They learn to take a pride in their work and make progress in each lesson, in skills, knowledge and understanding.
