Local Area

Tavistock is a thriving market town with 11,000 residents and is situated on the western fringes of Dartmoor National Park with the Cornish border close to the west and Plymouth the nearest city to the south.  It is an ancient Stannary town and derives its name from the River Tavy which flows through the town.  Tavistock has a rich history; the site of a Benedictine Abbey, a Market Charter town in 1105 and the birth place of St Francis Drake in 1542.

Tavistock Town

The town centre boasts a wealth of established well known branded shops together with a variety of independently owned shops and cafes.  There are several pubs and a variety of places to eat both during the day and the evening.  The Pannier Market has an array of stalls many of which change on a daily basis.  The Town Hall hosts many events during the year and at The Wharf you can experience live music and other theatrical acts and also doubles as a cinema.  There is a small museum in the town centre.

 Local Attractions

Other nearby attractions include Morwellham Quay and Mining centre, in the Tamar Valley World Heritage area, Tama Trails for walks in the woods, Dingles Steam Fairground museum and of course the wonders of Dartmoor with its beautiful scenery, wonderful walks, spooky stories, myths and legends and a host of small villages with cafes and pubs to feed and water you.  Pony trekking is another option to see Dartmoor should donning walking boots and waterproofs not be to your taste.

The coastal area of north Cornwall is about an hours’ drive away with dramatic coastal walks and a host of surfers’ beaches like Polzeath and Widemouth Bay.  The south coast encompasses surfing areas like Whitsand Bay and the more gentle areas like Wembury, perfect for a spot of rock pooling.

Tavistock is well placed to take advantage of the great outdoors no matter what your preference is to enjoy it.
