Coleg Gwent is looking for an individual of the highest calibre to join its governing body (The Coleg Gwent Further Education Corporation).

With the best learner outcomes in Wales, over 20,000 students choose to study with us each year on a wide range of full time, part time, work-based and professional courses. We aim to be the college of choice for learners and employers alike and are continually striving for excellence. These are exciting times, with a number of new strategic partnerships, campus developments and commercial ventures in the pipeline; the Board works closely with senior management to provide the strong leadership needed to ensure success.

As a member of the Board, you will share responsibility for setting the educational character and mission of the College and ensuring it meets its strategic objectives. The Board also agrees annual budgets, is accountable for the use of public funds and must ensure the College’s long term financial sustainability.

Candidates should possess strong business skills, the ability to think strategically and an entrepreneurial outlook. We are looking for someone who either lives or works in South Wales and who has the knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to contribute effectively. An interest in education, training and skills would be beneficial, as would an understanding of the needs of employers in the region.

To maintain a balance of relevant skills on the Board, applications would be especially welcome from those with a background in ICT/digital technologies or Marketing and Communications.

This is a highly rewarding voluntary role where you can make a significant contribution. Governors are expected to attend monthly Board meetings (held on a Tuesday evening), as well as termly committee meetings and seminars. The Board operates on a paper-fee basis and Governors are issued with iPads to facilitate this. Meeting papers are made available electronically and additional time will be needed to read and prepare for meetings. Governors are also encouraged to take a wider interest in the life of the College through site visits and attendance at events such as exhibitions, shows and achievement celebrations. Reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed for attendance at meetings and College events.

Individuals are appointed to the Board on the basis of their experience, skills and suitability for the role. The Corporation is committed to equality of opportunity and diversity in the workplace and wholeheartedly accepts statutory requirements in this respect.
