Wolsey House Vision and Values

Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils to be confident, happy citizens. Wolsey House Primary School is at the heart of the community. The happiness and wellbeing of each child is central to the ethos of the school. Children are encouraged to cooperate with one another, respect diversity and treat others as equals. We are a highly motivated and caring team. We are committed to providing opportunities for all our learners to develop into respectful, compassionate citizens, who contribute positively to the wellbeing of others and society.

About Us

Wolsey House Primary School is a non-selective school with provision for 3-11 year olds. Currently there are 612 pupils on roll with 52 part-time places in our Nursery. The school comprises 2 separate single storey buildings on a large site. The site includes extensive playgrounds and a playing field, an area of woodland, a pond and nature reserve, and an allotment adjacent to the school. The site is rich in wildlife being regularly visited by foxes, rabbits and woodpeckers. The school opened in 1973. It serves the Abbey Rise estate and housing areas around Abbey Park. Approximately 60% of pupils come from the school’s priority area and 40% from elsewhere. Classrooms are arranged in "bases".

There are three bases in the main school, each of which consists of four classes opening onto the central area. There is a strong focus on learning as a shared process. We aim to support each other in positive ways. Wolsey House is a high performing school. It is very popular and has more applicants than places available in the Foundation Stage, Key Stages One and Two. The school is a caring environment, there are good working relationships, and a calm, positive atmosphere. Wolsey House Primary School is a place where people matter and we are very proud of the tradition the school has for taking care of, nurturing and supporting children as they learn and develop. Parents, carers, teachers, support staff and children have worked together to make this a good school where children are happy, well behaved and successful.

Our School Name

Wolsey House Primary School takes its name from Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (c.1473 – 1529). Wolsey was a commoner who, through sheer hard work and determination, rose to become Henry VIII’s Lord Chancellor, the most powerful position in the land after the king himself.

Wolsey served as Chancellor for fourteen years but fell out of favour with the king when he failed to secure his divorce from Catherine of Aragon. Henry needed permission from the Pope to divorce Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn. Wolsey was unable to persuade the Pope to agree and was summoned to London to stand trial in 1529. He stopped at Leicester on the journey to London and was taken ill and died at Leicester Abbey. He was buried at the Abbey, now part of Abbey Park, which is just a short walk from our school.
