Welcome to Frome College

Our vision is simple – great teaching combined with a strong focus on students’ aspirations, achievement and personal development. Our vision means great outcomes and life chances for our young people. Underpinning everything we do is a respect for all students and their parents, a full commitment to professionalism and a well ordered and caring school community.

At Frome College our curriculum is designed to ensure that all students achieve to the very best of their ability. Lessons are tailored to meet the needs of all learners and are engaging, fast paced and fun. We encourage debate, discussion and questions for our teachers. Students are taught skills and strategies to help them become effective, independent, resilient learners which prepares them for the different stages of school life and beyond.

The design of the curriculum provides complete continuity of learning for students from Year 9-13. Learners are given appropriate and specialist advice and support in making the transition between Key Stages 3-5, preparing them fully for higher education opportunities or embracing the world of work. We offer an outstanding range of subjects at both key stage four and five, the breadth of subjects offered ensures that our young people maximise their social, moral, spiritual and cultural development.

Our House system organises our young people into five learning and support communities; each led by an experienced Head of House (HoH) who ensure everyone  settles into college life well and has the support and care they deserve. Our welfare team work closely with students and families to provide swift and effective intervention when needed.

Look out for our termly newsletter, weekly bulletins and articles in the press to see and learn about the many extra-curricular and wider opportunities available. As you will see, Frome College is a richly resourced and stimulating place in which to work, learn and achieve. We pride ourselves on the additional opportunities we provide for students; learning inside the classroom is the key to success but we also believe that so much more can be learnt beyond the classroom. A quote from Ofsted sums this up perfectly: "extremely wide range of extra-curricular activities and after-school clubs, which make highly effective use of the theatre and other facilities on the school site, as well as in the community. All activities are very well attended and highly valued by students. Many of these also show the very strong relationships the school has with many businesses and organisations within Frome – it is very much at the heart of the community".

However, we are never complacent and we are constantly looking for ways to improve, in order to serve our families and the community with the very best education to offer. I am confident that we will, with the support of our community, continue to thrive and prosper. We are ambitious for our students and I trust that you wish to be part of the success story which is Frome College.

About Us

Frome College believes that certain principles and values must guide our actions and relationships, with our employees, students and external organisations. Values of trust, honesty and integrity permeate through everything that we do and in the way that we do it.

Frome College acknowledges that teachers hold the keys to a better future for all. They inspire, challenge and empower young people to become innovative and responsible global citizens. Every day, they help to build the inclusive knowledge societies we need for tomorrow and the century ahead.

Frome College believes that Support Staff play an integral role alongside the teaching staff and must be valued as such.  It is acknowledged that much hidden hard work takes place each and every day just to keep the school open and functioning.

Learning is not possible without professional, well trained, well supported, accountable and valued staff. Teachers’ professional knowledge and skills are the most important factor for quality education. Frome College is committed to continual professional development and support and to the right for all staff to have honest evaluative feedback to enhance professional development, performance and learning outcomes.

It is also recognised that many teachers and support staff go the extra mile and well beyond ‘directed time’ or contracted hours. Indeed it is recognised that such goodwill enables a huge number of valuable activities to take place, such as sports fixtures across the county, Duke of Edinburgh, Cadets, trips, residentials, music, art, drama, public speaking, debating, business and enterprise activities, radio club, subject specific clubs and a whole range of other activities.  These activities are often THE activities that a student will remember from their time at College and represent the enduring ethos of our school.

We have a commitment to our community to provide the best education for our young people to ensure that they have the very best life chances. As an Upper School / High School it is recognised that every teaching group is an examination group which brings a high level of accountability and stress. Changing syllabi at GCSE, BTEC and A Level alongside changing assessment regimes is seen as exerting considerable additional pressure on our staff. The College is committed to working with all staff groups to seek ways of maintaining and improving staff welfare whist at the same time delivering high quality outcomes for all students.

All staff are stakeholders in Frome College. We all operate within the restrictions of a reducing real-terms budget, within one of the worst-funded local authorities and an authority that then top slices (from the budget) more than most. As an upper school a higher percentage than most will be enrolled in the Sixth Form. Downward pressures on Sixth Form funding, which is also exempt from changes in national funding formula, adds additional concerns. It is the ethos, professionalism and goodwill of staff at Frome College that allows our school to continue to grow from strength to strength improving the outcomes and opportunities for our young people.
