Qualification requirements for Overseas Trained Teachers "OTTs"
Normally, teachers from Canada, New Zealand and Australia can teach for up to 2 years before applying for QTS provided that your visa or work permit allows you to work in the UK, however, we recommend that you check your personal circumstances against the Home Office advice. If you were trained in the EEA and wish to teach in the UK, the Home Office provides guidance on criminal record checks for overseas applicants and also offers guidance for schools and colleges on the employment of overseas trained teachers.
This also covers the award of qualified teacher status (QTS) for teachers who qualified in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA.
COMPARING QUALIFICATIONSThe National Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom (NARIC) compare qualifications gained overseas to the qualifications for teaching within the British education system.
If you are an EEA-qualified teacher, you can simply contact the Teaching Agency on 0800 389 2500 or visit the DfE’s Get Into Teaching page.
If you have qualified elsewhere in the world, you need a Statement of Comparability from the NARIC. For full details of how to do this, see the flyer and flowchart from NARIC here.
