At Burton we welcome children, their parents and carers into a friendly, nurturing, hardworking and exciting environment, where respect for others and positive attitudes towards work and behaviour are firmly embedded. Relationships throughout the school are fundamental to a positive ethos. We have a very skilled and supportive Governing Body, who work in close partnership with the school community to ensure that there is mutual respect and trust, as well as challenge, ambition and drive.

We are very proud of our strong partnership with the local community; village groups, Burton Pre-School, local primary schools, feeder secondary schools and the parish church at Prestwold. Together we ensure that the school is at the centre of the community and the children grow to understand the importance of belonging and develop a strong community spirit.

We offer a relevant and exciting, broad and balanced curriculum, where children are encouraged to be independent, deep thinkers and make informed choices about their learning. We ensure a wide range of experiences, especially through educational visits, music, sport and the performing arts. We consider skills of communication, maths and English to be the foundation of our learning and we are extremely proud of our high standards and achievements, as highlighted in our most recent OfSTED inspection – 2018, when we were awarded "Outstanding" in all areas.

We encourage all parents and carers to come in at every opportunity, whether it is to talk to teachers about their child’s progress, see their child achieve and perform, to be part of social events or to discuss openly and honestly any concerns or difficulties their child may have during this first stage of their educational journey. We listen to the views of our pupils and parents and use them to shape the strategic direction of the school.

Come and see our school in action and feel the positive atmosphere for yourself! Contact the school today to arrange a time to meet me and have a tour of the school.

Ethos and Values

How British Values are promoted at Burton on the Wolds Primary School.

At Burton on the Wolds Primary School we value each and every member of our school community as individuals and respect their rights and freedom. Through our school values, which were decided upon by pupils, we promote the values of:

- respect

- responsibility

- empathy

- honesty

- kindness

Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our school council. The elections of School Councillors are based on pupil votes.

Rule of Law

Pupils are helped to distinguish right from wrong, in the classroom, during assemblies and on the playground.

The behaviour and anti bullying policies set out a zero tolerance baseline for any form of aggression, abuse or violence, which extends to pupils, staff, parents and carers.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are encouraged to be independent learners, constantly making choices within a safe and supportive environment.

As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely through our E-safety, PSHE lessons and also by encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their actions.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

Assemblies promote respect for others and the importance of good manners. Pupils work collaboratively and value others’ opinions.

Religious festivals are observed as part of RE and as part of British cultural tradition.

Through the PSHE and RE curriculums pupils are encouraged to discuss and respect differences between people, such as differences of faith, ethnicity, disability, gender or sexuality and differences of family situations.

They are: kindness, honesty, empathy, respect and responsibility.
