Overview

Cleves is a Junior Academy School of 720 children, aged 7 to 11 years, set in its own extensive grounds. We aim to produce well-developed community members whilst at the same time achieving high academic standards in all areas.

Our KS2 SATs results are high but we provide a broad balanced skills based curriculum full of exciting opportunities, with a particular emphasis on Sport and the Performing Arts. We hold the Artsmark Gold Award, the Sports Kite Mark and the International School award amongst others.

About Us

Ethos At Cleves we aim to develop an inclusive community in which each individual feels supported and secure and through which everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. At Cleves we aim to teach skills, knowledge and understanding which pupils need to lead confident, healthy lives and to become informed, active and responsible citizens, through the provision of a broad, balanced curriculum At Cleves, we are all learners, striving to progress and develop. Our aim is to produce well rounded community members at the end of the Cleves experience.

We give the children a wide range of experiences which will enthuse and excite them and thus encourage high quality learning. We have high expectations of all. We believe that our curriculum should prepare children for life in a fast changing society. We place emphasis on the development of six learning behaviours and teach our pupils to be: Independent Learners Self-Managers Effective Participants Creative Thinkers Reflective Learners Team Workers These are qualities that are important through life. They can be developed at home as well as at school and we hope you will help us in this way.

Our curriculum is innovative in that we seek to teach key life skills as well as knowledge. The children know which skills they are striving to develop in their learning and assess their progress at the end of session. Personal development holds equal importance to academic importance at Cleves and you will see a total transformation of your children during their time here. Self esteem is key and we seek to develop this through a variety of activities and a positive attitude. To accompany the six learning behaviours we have identified what we consider five fundamental values which are taught and encouraged in all aspects of school life. These are: Tolerance Respect High Aspirations Working Together Honesty

Living and Working in Surrey

Surrey is a county of contrasts. Only a short journey from London, it also offers a quick escape into peaceful countryside. This pleasant environment is combined with transport links that include the M3, M23 and M25 motorways, road and rail to London, and easy access to Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

In spite of a population of just over a million in a comparatively small area of 650 square miles, 80% of the county is farmland, woods, heath and open land. Although Surrey is a wealthy county, there are areas of relative poverty, particularly around some of the larger towns and a number of schools have pupils with a wide diversity of nationalities, cultures and languages.

Booming economy
There have recently been several major town centre redevelopments in Surrey. In the field of education and research, centres include Royal Holloway University (London) at Egham and Surrey University at Guildford. New research related technologies are also represented at Surrey University's research park and many multinational companies continue to relocate from London to Surrey.

Environmental issues
In Surrey there is a need to balance environmental conservation with the requirement for more homes, roads and commercial development.

For teachers in schools interested in green issues, Surrey County Council promotes environmental awareness with a wide range of initiatives to develop pupils' knowledge and experience.

Tourism and leisure
Surrey provides a wealth of contrasting leisure activities. Among the historic sites are Hampton Court Palace and Runnymede, as well as National Trust properties such as Clandon and Polesden Lacey. Other attractions include picturesque villages, gardens, such as Wisley, racecourses and river trips. Surrey also has seven major arts venues.

Sports centres are also plentiful, among them the Spectrum Centre in Guildford, probably the most exciting leisure complex in the UK. Other first-class facilities are available in Camberley, Egham, Lingfield and Oxted.

For cyclists and walkers there is an extensive network of footpaths, bridleways and cycle routes and Surrey also boasts high-quality shopping malls, particularly in Kingston, Guildford and Camberley.

The Visit Surrey tourism website gives comprehensive information about all these leisure activities.

Travel
Surrey has good road and rail links to London, Gatwick and Heathrow airports.
