Welcome

You will find a very warm welcome at Cyfarthfa High School. We aim to provide the highest possible quality of education for both boys and girls. Each child is treated as an individual and strong pastoral support from the outset creates an atmosphere of security and cooperation. Relationships between staff and students are based on mutual support. This is a friendly school - it is important to us that children should feel secure, valued and happy.

Situated in the Heart of the historical town of Merthyr Tydfil on the edge of beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park, the school enjoys a range of accommodation and sports facilities including a sports hall, gym and all weather flood lit pitch. We have over 1100 students on roll from all corners of the County Borough.

Our high expectations for behaviour, attendance and positive attitude to learning form the foundations for future success in a competitive world. It has never been more important to get a good start in life. We are keen to develop the right balance between preparing for future challenges and maintaining our proud heritage and core values. Our parents are overwhelmingly positive about the teaching and the opportunities children have to learn and develop in a happy and safe climate. Achievement of all kinds is valued and celebrated.

We believe firmly in the importance of a close working relationship between school and home, between teachers and parents, and we do our utmost to encourage new pupils and parents to feel welcome. Dedicated, experienced and highly qualified specialist staff underpins all our labours. Working with parents and the local community, we look forward to providing a stimulating and rewarding education to prepare our girls and boys for the challenge of life beyond school. With our shared commitment, together we can push the boundaries of the possible and enhance your child’s success now and in the future.
Choosing a school is not an easy task and needs careful consideration. I am confident that the quality of education on offer here at Cyfarthfa High School will make your choice the correct one.

About Us

Cyfarthfa High School was established in 1970, following the amalgamation of Cyfarthfa Castle Grammar School and Georgetown Secondary Modern School. Between September 1981 and July 2014 the Lower School (Years 7 and 8), was housed in Cyfarthfa Castle and Cyfarthfa Park. The Upper School was in excellent purpose-built premises at Cae Mari Dwn, Thomastown. The sites were approximately two miles apart. The Lower School closed in July 2014.

From September 2014 all pupils from years 7 – 11 have been located at Cae Mari Dwn, Thomastown.
Today Cyfarthfa High is a comprehensive school of over 1100 pupils in the 11-16 age range. Excellent relationships exist with our partner primary schools and virtually all pupils from these schools enter Cyfarthfa High. The school population is strong and we welcome applications for places at the school from pupils outside the school's catchment area.

ETHOS AND TRADITION:
We organise a successful and orderly school where pupils learn in a happy environment. We expect our pupils to behave in a way which brings credit on their homes and themselves and which reflects the caring ethos of Cyfarthfa.

Pupils are expected to be courteous and well-behaved towards:
- each other;
- members of staff (teaching and non-teaching);
- all visitors to the school.

They are expected to be punctual at all times for lessons and registration periods and to wear full school uniform.

In the interests of safety and easy movement around the school, pupils must follow the one way system and show consideration for others in all parts of the school.
Again, with student safety very much in mind, Years 7 - 10 are expected to remain on site at lunch time, unless they have written permission from a parent or guardian to go home for lunch. Year 11 pupils have the privilege of being allowed out of school for lunch. This substantial privilege can be withdrawn at any time should any of the Year 11 pupils fall below our high expectations of them as role models within school or outside in the local community.

The basis of all our rules at Cyfarthfa is mutual respect and concern for the physical, emotional and academic well-being of all our pupils. This being so, we take very seriously any cases of bullying and ask that pupils/parents report any concerns they have in this context to the appropriate member of staff - indeed, any member of staff - without delay.
We have a range of strategies for dealing with bullying when it occurs, including the immediate involvement of parents and a range of actions, some involving counselling and restorative approaches, and where necessary, reference to the educational psychologist. An Assistant Headteacher oversees our Inclusion Strategy.
We attach enormous importance to working in partnership with parents, whose support is essential if we are to achieve our aim of maintaining an excellent level of school discipline. These partnership aims of the school are well summed-up in our Home/School Agreement.
