Overview

Glebelands is a school with many strengths and yet we are constantly looking for ways to improve further. The high quality of teaching and learning is central to the success of the school and underpins the excellent progress students make and the standards they achieve. The teachers at Glebelands believe they can, and do, make a difference to the lives of students they teach so that the young people who pass through this school leave as happy, confident individuals who have developed the skills to lead fulfilling lives and make a positive contribution to society.

Relationships between all members of our school community are based on respect - respect for ourselves, respect for others, respect for the environment and respect for learning. The school is split into year groups, with each year supported by six tutors and a Head of Achievement who stays with students throughout their time at Glebelands. In this way, our staff get to know our students well and support their progress academically, socially and emotionally, helping them to become self-reflecting and motivated learners. Our curriculum is based around and follows national guidelines.

However, Glebelands is a Specialist Science College and this theme has permeated all subject areas in the school. Enhancement and extra-curricular activities ensure all our learners have opportunities to get involved in the wider aspects of school life and develop their interpersonal and leadership skills. By combining high expectations of work with the state-of-the-art equipment throughout our modern facilities, we are able to provide our learners with an outstanding ‘learning platform’ from which they can develop their own interests and receive the education they deserve. About Us

Academically the school is organised on a departmental basis. Each department has its own suite of specialist rooms with an attached office and resource area. Tutorial System

There is a strong tutorial system based on year groups. Form tutors normally progress with their groups through the school supported by Heads of School. The tutorial system is responsible for the welfare and personal and social development of individual students and this is facilitated by a programme of Personal and Social Education. Increasingly, tutors are monitoring academic progress and supporting the curriculum through interviews and by target setting, to ensure students reach their potential in all areas of school life.

The Curriculum

In Key Stage 3 students follow a broad, balanced course which more than fulfils the expectations of the National Curriculum. In Key Stage 4 all students follow courses leading to nine or ten GCSEs made up of a core of English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Double Award Science, Religious Education plus a Humanities subject, a Modern Foreign Language, a technical or practical subject and one other of their choice. In addition, there are several GNVQ and RSA courses which have a more vocational bias. All these courses are supplemented by valuable non-examination subjects such as Physical Education and Lifeskills.

The curriculum is underpinned by a philosophy of equal opportunity for all students.The curriculum in enriched by a wide variety of sporting and other extra curricular activities, including residential trips. The school has a long tradition of sporting success and produces a variety of outstanding dramatic and musical productions.

Staff

We currently have a teaching staff of 54 which is made up of a mixture of experienced and younger teachers who support each other professionally and enjoy each others’ company at the various staff social events.Some staff live in Cranleigh, although housing in this part of Surrey is expensive. Surrey County Council has a “Key Homes for Key Workers” scheme to help first time buyers buy their first homes. Many other teachers choose to travel from other towns in Surrey, Sussex or south London.
