Overview

Glyn School is an inspiring and friendly boys’ comprehensive in Surrey and one of the county’s best-performing schools; judged by Ofsted in May 2012 as ‘outstanding’ for the second time.  Since 2005 we have also admitted girls into our Sixth Form, convinced that co-education promotes mutual respect and empathy at this important stage in our students’  education.

Founded in 1927, Glyn School has a long heritage of academic excellence, sporting prowess, artistic achievement and service to the community. While preserving its best traditions, we are a forward-looking school, committed to ensuring that students leave Glyn with the life skills, confidence and aspiration to make a positive difference in today’s society, as well as having a clear sense of what is right. An academy since 2011, we aim to offer the best possible education through a broad and stimulating curriculum, a wealth of activities beyond the classroom and outstanding pastoral care. Students make excellent progress and achieve strong exam results, due to our high expectations and innovative teaching which inspires a love of learning.  Important though academic success is, we also aim to nurture the talents of our students in the creative arts, sport and leadership.

Our mission is underpinned by the eight values of Glyn School – Opportunity, Learning, Achievement, Respect, Integrity, Community, Challenge and Enjoyment. In 2014, Glyn was designated a Teaching School, one of a select number that represent the most outstanding and innovative practice nationally. In addition, Glyn School benefits from being a founder member of GLF Schools, a multi academy trust, where the focus on collaboration, leadership and school improvement enables children to ‘Grow, Learn and Flourish’.

AboutUs

Our Mission Statement: 'Glyn’s mission is to inspire a love of learning and achievement that is founded on the virtues of integrity, respect and a desire to succeed. Every person is highly valued and expected to achieve their potential, through academic challenge, sporting endeavour and technological innovation.’   Our Core Values Learning Achievement Enjoyment Community Respect Integrity Challenge Opportunity   Specialist School Status In 1994 the school gained specialist status in Technology, one of the first in the country to receive this designation.

As a school we deliberately chose a specialism that would embrace our local community and be of benefit to all subject areas. Through our specialist status we have a community and link primary school programme. In October 2007 Glyn was re-accredited until our next OfSTED inspection. Training School Status   In 2003 the school gained Training School status.

This has enabled us to develop our professional development programme for all staff. In addition, this has enabled us to be at the forefront of the training programmes for new and trainee teachers. In April 2007, we were re-accredited as a Training School for a further three-year period. Investors in Careers In 2005 we were awarded the Investors in Careers award. This is a particularly important award for us as it recognises the extensive support for our boys and the opportunities provided for student guidance. We were re-accredited with this award in March 2008.

Ewell is a small village boasting a number of boutique shops, restaurants and pubs.  Epsom is within easy walking distance and has a leisure centre, cinema, theatre and shopping centre. There is a large supermarket within 5 minutes’ walk of the school making it easy for staff to pick up provisions either at the beginning or the end of a school day.

Local Attractions

Epsom is famous for its race course and Glyn School holds a number of events at the racecourse including all staff conferences and the Proms for Years 11 and 13.  The beautiful Surrey countryside including Box Hill, Leith Hill and Denbies Wine Estate are only a short drive or alternatively the culture and diversity of London are a brief train journey away.

Recreational Activities

Glyn School has its own playing fields a mile away from the main site and the school fields up to 21 rugby and football teams each Saturday morning during the season. There are a number of parks in Epsom & Ewell with public tennis courts and playing fields.  In the past Glyn has fielded a staff football team to take part in inter-school matches and there are number of other social sporting events that take place.

Headteacher's Welcome

I and each of my colleagues believe that every child has the right to an exceptional education.  It is therefore a privilege to welcome you to Glyn School, consistently one of the highest performing boys` comprehensive schools in the country, and a community where each of our students have the opportunity to both learn and flourish under the guidance of outstanding, passionate and committed staff. Our aim is that every student leaves us having gone beyond their potential, equipped with the resilience, confidence and drive that will enable them to forge rewarding futures for themselves.

Ours is a vibrant school for boys aged 11-16 with an oversubscribed and successful mixed Sixth Form. Founded in 1927, we have a rich history of academic, sporting and artistic excellence and in 2014 we were designated a teaching school, one of a select number that represent the most outstanding and innovative practice nationally.

At Glyn we hold high expectations of all our students in every respect. We have a unique and welcoming atmosphere that places side by side the highest possible aspirations for every student’s academic progress as well as the values that they hold and live by.  All of our students are individuals and we all, staff and students alike, celebrate the accomplishments of our community.

We want students to enjoy their learning and as a result achieve and succeed in all aspects of their academic and professional careers. We strive to ensure that their experience is founded on our eight core values:

• Learning & Achievement

• Enjoyment & Community

• Challenge & Opportunity

• Integrity & Respect

‘Integrity and Respect’ underpin our entire philosophy. A school community motivated by integrity and embodying a true understanding of respect and care for others is a successful school.  We also recognise that at the heart of our success lies a genuine desire to work in partnership with others. Parents and carers are our most important partners in supporting our students in meeting their potential.  We are fortunate, too, in drawing upon the expertise and support of the evolving family of GLF schools.

Few decisions are more important than where to apply for the next step in your son’s education.  Our website aims to give you an insight into what makes Glyn such a wonderful school and we warmly invite you to visit us, to sample the experience for yourself.

Teaching and Learning at Glyn School

Learning is the cornerstone of everything we do at Glyn.

Our top priority is, and always should be, to plan and deliver the best lessons possible on a consistent basis. This will ensure our students are afforded every opportunity for success and happiness in their future lives. Every young person in our care, irrespective of background, should be empowered to think for themselves and thrive in the modern world.

Teachers inspire students through the innovative ways in which they bring their subjects to life. They pose considered, challenging questions that serve to engage students and facilitate meaningful learning. The classroom should be an exciting place to be and the way in which a teacher delivers material should serve to create a sense of enjoyment within the classroom.

We favour no particular teaching style. It is up to us as a body of teachers to identify and develop what works with our students. The 'All Great Lessons' checklist below outlines what someone should look for in great lessons as they walk around our school. Past experience tells us that these feature in all great lessons.

In all great lessons:

  • All students are being challenged to think
  • There is a clear sense of purpose to the lesson
  • Students are articulating or expressing their thoughts and ideas
  • There is a safe, focused and respectful learning environment

Our Learning and Teaching themse focus on three major aspects of learning. A student must be able to reflect and learn from meaningful and timely feedback. They must be constantly challenge to think about the world around them and how it works. They must also be given the opportunity to develop the way in which they articulate and express their ideas. With these themes in mind, both staff and students alike should look to the past, present and future as they enjoy a life of learning.
