Local Area

Caterham

Caterham is a town in the Tandridge District of Surrey, England. The town is administratively divided into two: Caterham on the Hill and Caterham Valley that includes the main town centre in the middle of a dry valley but rises to equal heights to the south. The town lies close to the A22, centred 21 miles (34 km) from Guildford and 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Croydon, in an upper valley cleft into the dip slope of the North Downs. Caterham on the Hill is above the valley to the west. Due to its proximity to London, Caterham is a commuter town, with small-to-medium sized businesses of its own however relatively few business/industrial parks. It has a significant area of retail and restaurants in Caterham Valley as well as pubs dotted throughout.

 Local Attractions

Caterham expanded into the valley during the Victorian era after the railway line opened in 1856. The North Downs Way National Trail passes close to Caterham.

Based in Caterham, the East Surrey Museum is a large archive collection of interesting pieces that have been brought together to tell the story of this area of the country. There are many pieces on display that include archaeological finds that have been found in digs that have taken place across the county. There are also examples of antiques, maps, documents and photographs that help to bring the rich history to life.

Just outside of the Surrey town of Redhill is Aqua Sports Lake. The lake is found within Mercers Country Park near Merstham and offers a whole range of waterborne activities for all the family, clubs and schools. Some of the activities on offer include Wind Surfing, Dinghy Sailing, yachting and a variety of paddle sports. Professionally qualified coaches are on hand to teach the proper techniques to get the most out of any visit to Aqua Sports Lake.

Coulsdon Common is an historic piece of public land on the edge of the oldest part of the town. The common is a mixture of open grassland and woodland hideaways. The grassy areas are used by locals for seasonal sports including cricket, football and rugby. The woodland is popular amongst locals and attracts visitors from miles around to wander through nature enjoying the many different types of wild life and animal life that live within.

Teaching and Learning at Hillcroft Primary School

Teaching and Learning is at the heart of everything we do at Hillcroft.

We strive to make every lesson, of every day engaging, inspiring and challenging for our children.

The Hillcroft Lesson Elements

Teaching and learning at Hillcroft is centred around our 8 key elements:

  • ·         Engaging hook
  •  ·        Skills focussed LO and progressive SC
  •  ·        Effective Modelling
  •  ·        Effective Differentiation
  •  ·        Effective guided Teaching group
  •           Expected progress
  •  ·        Behaviour and Attitudes for learning
  •           Effective Feedback

These key elements are central to any development or training we undertake.

Professional development

Weekly staff training opportunities are aimed at celebrating the strengths of teaching practice and identifying ways to move practice forward through both development from internal staff as well as external training.

Our Curriculum

Hillcroft is a Cornerstones school because across the school we teach using the Cornerstones thematic approach. This is where the children’s learning is centred around exciting and stimulating topics each half term which are reflected in the learning environments and school visits.  Each topic includes most subjects, with a main subject that each topic is heavily based on. The topics for this year can be seen on our website in curriculum.

We are passionate about providing the children of Hillcroft with a variety of experiences and opportunities, therefore we are very lucky to be one of three GLF schools who have a School Phiz Lab for all science lessons. This is an engaging, stimulating environment for the children to experience ‘real’ science which is led by them and their curiosity. Each classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and projector. We also benefit from having a bank of chrome books and tablets which are regularly used in the classrooms.
