We are a mixed comprehensive school of approaching 1600 pupils, including around 300 students in the Sixth Form. At present, we take pupils from seven feeder primary schools – Bryn Celyn, Coed Glas, Glyncoed, Llanishen Fach, Llysfaen, Ton-yr-Ywen and Thornhill. We also welcome a number of pupils from other primary schools including Birchgrove and Rhiwbina. A number of these pupils come into our Specialist Hearing Impaired Unit. Others come by parental preference from other parts of the city. We fully support the current Welsh educational model of not having to choose to be a specialist school in one field. Our hope is to strive for excellence in all areas of both the timetabled curriculum and everything else that a school can provide. We are determined to continually work towards the five Educational Goals that are highlighted on the front page of this website. We hope that this website can make some contribution towards those goals, keeping you informed and sharing achievements. We would also welcome any constructive feedback on its layout or content. We expect all of our students to achieve five or more GCSEs or equivalent and over the last three years an average of 97% have done so. We expect most of our pupils to achieve five or more GCSE passes, or equivalent at grades A* and over the last three years an average of 77% have done so. We expect the great majority of our students to achieve these five good passes, including English and Mathematics and over the last three years an average of 61% have done so. Whilst these are very sound achievements, we are never satisfied and are always striving for our pupils to do better.

Llanishen High School is a mixed comprehensive school of 1650 pupils. LocationIt is situated on the northern edge of Cardiff and serves the areas of the Heath, Llanishen, Thornhill and Lisvane . Most of its pupils come from the associate primary schools, Ton Yr Ywen, Coed Glas, Cefn Onn, Thornhill, Lisvane and Heol Llanishen Fach but a significant proportion of its intake comes to the school on the basis of parental appeal. Each year group is usually substantially over-subscribed. There are approximately 250 students in the Sixth Form who are currently studying for AS, A level, BTEC and Welsh Bacc.Staffing and OrganisationThe school has a teaching staff of 105, including part time workers. The Governers usually appoint staff to permanent contracts unless appointments are necessary to cover maternity leave or leave of absence for any other reason. There are 22 non teaching staff who work with the teachers to provide a better service for the pupils. The school has achieved Investors in People status and is committed to helping everyone who works here to do the best possible work in raising standards for pupils. Colleagues are consulted on all major policy decisions and are encouraged to raise openly any matters concerned with the school's effective operation. CurriculumIn terms of curriculum, the school is organised largely into faculties, with Heads of Faculty and Heads of Departments/Subject responsible for their management. The guidance system is managed by Year Team Leaders and their assistants. Year team Leaders stay with their year for the five years of compulsory secondary education. Most teaching staff are also form tutuors and they usually stay with their form over the five year cycle.Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups in Year 7, with the exception of mathematics where there is a small degree of setting. Each year is then divided into two parallel populations and the timetable is blocked so that subjects can decide on their own grouping arrangements.The work of the school is monitored and evaluated by the Headteacher and the senior leadership team, and as wide a range of colleagues  and pupils as possible involved, depending on the issue under review. The review process is used to inform development planning and to maintain the school's progress.School Site and BuildingsThe school is surrounded by housing and situated in the middle of its catchment area. It is built on an extensive and multi levelled site. Lessons are largely taught in subject suites of rooms in so far as the current buildings allow. The original school was built in 1957, added to in 1974 and was given a new Science Block in 1999 when pupil numbers began to grow rapidly. A further new technology block was opened in early 2014 and new block for music and drama in the autumn of 2014. Another canteen facility was opened in the spring of 2015.
