Nursery and Primary
There are just over 80 infant, junior and primary schools. Around half of Medway's schools admit children from three-years-old into the Foundation Stage and provide nursery education for three and four-year-olds. In addition, a further 120 independent nurseries and pre-schools are registered providers of free part-time nursery education for three and four-year-olds.
Secondary Schools
The local authority operates a selective admission system, comprising mainly of grammar and high schools. Grammar school admissions are based on an assessment of children during their final year at primary school. A number of schools have subject specialist status during sports, humanities, science and maths. We also have training schools that are leaders in staff development. A two-tier comprehensive admission system is in operation on the Hoo Peninsula.
Special schools and units
Medway has three special schools providing education for four to 19-year-olds, for pupils with severe, moderate and complex learning difficulties. A number of units are attached to mainstream schools, catering for a variety of special needs and promoting inclusion for all of Medway's pupils.
Extended schools
Extended Schools is a national agenda that helps schools to support families and provide vital resources. The result is a better educational environment for Medway's communities.
