Montacute is a specialist school for children and young people who have Complex Learning Difficulties or Disabilities (CLDD).

This means that our pupils usually have more than one part of themselves that affects their ability to learn. These parts interact with each other to create a unique picture in terms of their individual learning needs and abilities. People with CLDD are unlikely to fit into a ready–made learning framework, and need a very personalised learning pathway put together for them.

At Montacute, we have skilled staff with different types of expertise who can collaborate together – as well as with external consultants where needed – to create learning approaches for individual pupils, based on finding out about that particular pupil. If we come across a pupil who needs us to have some knowledge we do not have, we will train ourselves so we can support that pupil.

We specialise in taking pupils who are at the most complex end of the spectrum, ie. children and young people whose ability to learn has been most affected by their difficulties and disabilities.

Vision and Values

When I first came to Montacute in 2013, our pupils decided on three key words which summed up school for them: Learning, Fun, Friendship. We have therefore taken these three words to represent us on our school logo (also designed by one of our pupils). When you unpick each word, you can see how right our pupils were to choose them as the three most important things that characterise our school.

Learning is not just something that happens at school, it happens anywhere at any time. Good learning can help people have as many choices in their lives as possible, and know how to make the choices that will help them be happy.

The learning that is most import will vary for every single person. We want to look at each individual, understand what is most important for them, and find ways of helping them learn what they most need.

Everyone who knows a child or young person, whether family, friend or professional, is a possible partner in helping that child or young person to learn and thrive, and so we will be most effective if we can find ways to work together.

We want our learners to feel safe - but also excited by life! We do our best to to make sure that school is full of rich experiences. We aim to find out what our learners like so that we can use it as a way of helping them learn. Sometimes you have to come out of your comfort zone to find out what you enjoy, and we carefully support our young people to try new things - cope - and believe in themselves.

All of our learners are encouraged to be aware of others, and to know how to behave socially, how to communicate, and how to make enjoyable relationships. We want our learners to have a sense of what it is like to be a valued part of our school community. We also go out into our local community to learn how to use it well - and we invite young people from other schools into our school so that we can have fun and learn together.
