North Star 82° is a Primary Special School for 62 children. We are part of the North Star Academy Trust and children who have a place at North Star 82° will have an Education, Health and Care Plan. We cater for children who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties, which have often hindered their educational progress. Our children live mainly in Bristol but we also accept referrals from the surrounding Unitary Authorities and some of the Welsh Local Authorities. The school is housed in the renovated 17th Century Henbury Manor that is approximately five miles from the centre of Bristol.
The school stands in its own grounds which offer a wonderful facility for the children. The old stables have also been renovated and provide an extension to the main house accommodation for pupils in KS1. The main house has seven classrooms, a fully equipped kitchen for Food Technology activities and a Hall. Lunches are cooked on site. We are proud of our good reputation. We offer a nurturing ethos in which the educational and pastoral care of the children is paramount. In this friendly, caring and happy school we have high expectations of both the children’s behaviour and their academic progress. We actively encourage and support children to achieve the very best that they can and to really enjoy their time at North Star 82°. In this way they develop a new confidence in themselves as learners thus raising their self-esteem. A good education is the right of every child. We recognise that school has not always been a positive experience for many of our children and so we aim to offer a fresh start to every child. Children are given the opportunity to develop in all aspects so that they can become equipped to both achieve success and contribute to our ever-changing world.
We are a small school with a high staffing ratio. We attempt to provide a calm and stable environment in which our pupils can learn to adjust their emotional responses to more acceptable levels. We set very clear and consistent boundaries of expected behaviour. Teaching and learning at North Star 82° is based upon the principle that all children must be happy and enjoy success to be able to achieve their potential. We have small classes of children with a Class Teacher and Learning Support Assistants. This means that children can have the curriculum differentiated to meet their needs. We aim to challenge the most able child as well as supporting those children who have an additional learning need to their primary SEMH need. We also have other professionals, who, from time to time, will work with us, to help design appropriate teaching strategies; these are the school’s Educational Psychologist and the Speech and Language Therapist as well as art, play and music therapists. We have the facilities and the expertise in our staff to offer the opportunity for all children to improve their emotional control and to make good progress academically. We believe in the importance of respect, safety, learning, diversity, and high standards. We believe that children learn best in a stable, caring and happy atmosphere and it is our aim to create and maintain a happy school. We also believe that children need clearly defined boundaries of expectation and so our discipline is firm, consistent and fair and creates a contained, safe environment. Our Vision, Aims and Mission statements underpin our work at North Star 82°.
