Overview

We believe that self-esteem and confidence are the best predictors of future success and we aim to ensure that every child (aged 4-11) has an opportunity to reach their fullest potential (academic, non-academic and social) within a safe, friendly, secure and nurturing environment.

Whilst giving high priority to the basic, essential life skills of literacy and numeracy, we look for talent and value achievement in other areas of the curriculum too.  We recognise that sporting, musical, creative and artistic talents are equally important and we look for as many opportunities as possible to develop our children's fullest potential in these areas.

Aside from the academic and creative curriculum, we place a great deal of emphasis on good, old-fashioned values.  We make no apology for setting firm boundaries, encouraging good manners, tolerance, social awareness and consideration.  Our rewards system is based around our school values which have been agreed by all stakeholders including the children themselves.  We promote a good work ethic, perseverance, team-work, friendship and a sense of community.

Regardless of the level of academic ability we have high expectations of all children and aim to ensure that every child has the opportunity to flourish.  Rather than 'labelling' individual children, we offer personalised learning for all, to meet a diverse range of needs and age-related expectations.  Through careful assessment and differentiation we identify children that need a little extra help or focused support for their learning as well as looking out for the 'high-fliers' who need extension opportunities to ensure they gain in independence to become fulfilled and creative learners with a life-long love of learning.

Adults and children share in the responsibility for making our school a success

About Us

St. Mary's Church of England Primary School provides education based on the principles and practices of the Church of England. Christian values underpin all aspects of the school.

Within St Mary’s we aim to nurture and maximise the full learning potential of each child, and foster their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development. We aim to:
  • create a happy and caring environment;
  • help children to learn that courtesy, good manners and consideration for others are very important qualities;
  • encourage children to be self-disciplined, independent and industrious, to take pride in their achievements, and to be generous in their friendship;
  • promote good relationships between pupils and adults;
  •  treat each child as an individual regardless of gender, nationality, religion or ability and provide teaching appropriate to his/her need;
  • have high but realistic expectations of each child;
  • work together closely as a team to provide a quality learning environment for our children;
  • prepare our pupils for the responsibility and experiences of adult life to enable them to develop as well rounded members of society;
The classrooms reflect an atmosphere, where children, are purposefully engaged in learning which promotes excellence, enjoyment, perseverance, self discipline and independence.

As a Church School the Christian faith lies at the heart of our ethos and underpins the way we work and live together as a community. Learning to take care of ourselves and others and to be tolerant and forgiving are important lessons that stand the children in good stead as they grow up.

We are fortunate to have strong links with all the local churches and particularly with St Mary’s Parish Church, where we attend and participate in services every term. Local clergy visit the school every week to lead collective worship. Although, as a church school, RE and collective worship are intrinsic parts of our teaching and learning policy, parents are legally permitted to withdraw their children from these activities. Supervision would be provided.

The school aims to provide a happy, safe and secure environment where all members of the community are treated with respect. We encourage good manners and responsible behaviour, and foster a positive attitude to learning by commending positive behaviour, effort and achievement through our consistent system of rewards.

The children are encouraged to have a voice in school planning and we have a school council with representatives from every class who meet regularly to give their ideas on planned improvements and to help find ways of making school life even better.

The Good Shepherd Trust

The Good Shepherd Trust is a family of schools within the Diocese of Guildford that support and help each other yet each school in the Trust knows that they are unique.  They also recognise that they have important roles to play in the development of their communities - both educationally and spiritually.

Schools in the Trust use the vision and values of Jesus Christ as the basis of their work which means that they value each child as an individual - whatever their social, cultural or religious background.

Living and Working in Surrey

Surrey is a county of contrasts. Only a short journey from London, it also offers a quick escape into peaceful countryside. This pleasant environment is combined with transport links that include the M3, M23 and M25 motorways, road and rail to London, and easy access to Gatwick and Heathrow airports.

In spite of a population of just over a million in a comparatively small area of 650 square miles, 80% of the county is farmland, woods, heath and open land. Although Surrey is a wealthy county, there are areas of relative poverty, particularly around some of the larger towns and a number of schools have pupils with a wide diversity of nationalities, cultures and languages.

Booming economy
There have recently been several major town centre redevelopments in Surrey. In the field of education and research, centres include Royal Holloway University (London) at Egham and Surrey University at Guildford. New research related technologies are also represented at Surrey University's research park and many multinational companies continue to relocate from London to Surrey.

Environmental issues
In Surrey there is a need to balance environmental conservation with the requirement for more homes, roads and commercial development.

For teachers in schools interested in green issues, Surrey County Council promotes environmental awareness with a wide range of initiatives to develop pupils' knowledge and experience.

Tourism and leisure
Surrey provides a wealth of contrasting leisure activities. Among the historic sites are Hampton Court Palace and Runnymede, as well as National Trust properties such as Clandon and Polesden Lacey. Other attractions include picturesque villages, gardens, such as Wisley, racecourses and river trips. Surrey also has seven major arts venues.

Sports centres are also plentiful, among them the Spectrum Centre in Guildford, probably the most exciting leisure complex in the UK. Other first-class facilities are available in Camberley, Egham, Lingfield and Oxted.

For cyclists and walkers there is an extensive network of footpaths, bridleways and cycle routes and Surrey also boasts high-quality shopping malls, particularly in Kingston, Guildford and Camberley.

The Visit Surrey tourism website gives comprehensive information about all these leisure activities.
