Overview

The Richard Pate School, founded in 1946, forms part of the Pate's Grammar School Foundation, a charity dating from 1574. In 1987, the school was relocated to an excellent eleven and a half acre semi-rural site on the southern outskirts of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Improved facilities since relocation include an all-weather surface for games, a new music school, computer suite, library, science lab, language room, art room, conservation area for environmental studies and an adventure play area. All national curriculum foundation subjects are taught with good SEN provision for both the under-achiever and the gifted and talented child. A plethora of extra-curricular activities operate during lunch break and after normal school. Children are thoroughly prepared for both grammar and independent school entry at 11+.

About Us

NURSERYFrom 3 Years  The Richard Pate Nursery is dedicated to providing the highest possible standards of early years care and education. The Nursery is located next to the main school in its own grounds where the children enjoy free flow between the inside and outside areas. We are registered with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) are are regularly inspected under the same criteria as those used for OFSTED inspections. PREP Department5 to 7 year - Reception to Year 2 On entry to the Prep Department, pupils continue their Foundation Stage education in one of two reception classes where they work towards the Early Learning goals. Smooth transition from the less formal although structured approach of the reception classes into years 1 and 2 relies upon sensitivity to each child’s individual needs. A variety of teaching methods and styles are applied to suit pupils of all abilities. The whole department offers a broad curriculum which provides a flexible child-centred approach to education, whilst maintaining a high level of commitment to the teaching of basic skills. Each child has access to specialist teaching areas for music, computer studies, dance and games, including use of the main hall / gymnasium, forum (dedicated gathering space), outdoor adventure play area and an all weather surface for sport / games. The ratio of adults to children is very favourable enabling a high degree of individual attention. Our experienced teaching staff are supported by well-qualified teachers’ assistants. We aim to provide a warm, caring but challenging environment in which each child feels secure, valued, stimulated and, above all, happy.  JUNIOR DEPARTMENT7+ to 11 years - Year 3 to Year 6  There is a gradual increase in specialist teaching as children progress through the Junior Department; the needs and capabilities of the individual are always the prime consideration. Nevertheless, we are in pursuit of academic excellence and children are expected to do homework each week and over weekends. We expect parents to create the right environment in which homework can be done. Learning support is provided for children experiencing difficulties with their work. There are two Deputy Heads, who oversee academic progress and pastoral welfare, and every class has a class-teacher to whom the children can directly relate.Subjects are taught with regard to the national curriculum and 11+ Common Entrance and scholarship to independent schools. Furthermore, children are thoroughly prepared for the entrance tests to grammar schools.
