Wandle Valley School was opened in September 1986 as the London Borough of Sutton's first school for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties. The School became the first Special academy on September the 1st 2012. The school caters for children who have social, emotional and behavioural development needs, between the age of 5 and 16, though in practice some referrals have been below this age range. The school has provision for 80 pupils with about one third primary age and two thirds secondary.
Our pupils often come to us with a history of failure in mainstream settings and many have experienced trauma in their everyday lives. Our pupils are challenging, but have a lot to offer and respond well when they realise that they are valued and we are not going to give up on them! The school buildings are both spacious and practical.
In the primary department there are three class bases, additional resource areas and ample storage space. Secondary pupils have access to an extensive range of specialist classrooms (HE, Science, CDT, Art/Pottery) as well as the usual class bases. Physical education is well catered for with both a large, well equipped sports hall, smaller gymnasium and weights gym as well as the usual outdoor facilities.
