Griffin Primary School is a popular school situated on the Bilton Grange Estate in the east of the city close to the main route out of the city to the coast and villages. 95% of the school population live in the Marfleet Ward, in the top 5% most deprived nationally. We are part of the Kingston Upon Hull Children and Young People’s Services as one of the approximately 70 primary schools within the city boundary.

Our existing, individually designed building was opened in 1993, but there was a Griffin Primary School on the site prior to that date. Designed in a continuous line to make a mostly single height horseshoe shape, there are two semi-open plan areas with three classrooms in each and two further areas with traditional classrooms in each. In addition, there is the nursery, a welcoming reception and admin area, library and hall. These rooms surround a central circular garden. There is a kitchen and our meals are prepared on site and most children stay at school for lunch. Large areas of hard-standing, grassed space and gardens surround and are central to the school.

 There are 22 teachers and a significant number of teaching assistants who support learning, some supporting children with statements of special educational need. Griffin Primary has four admin staff, four premises staff and seven lunchtime specific staff.  

At Griffin there are two classes in each year group.

Currently, there are 410 children on roll in the main school and 76 part-time nursery places which are full. In accordance with our admission procedures, all children are admitted to school in September of each year.  Approximately 35% of the children are on the SEN register. Most children have English as their first language. The children move to a range of secondary schools at the end of Y6.

The school actively encourages parents/carers to be involved with their child’s education and there are many opportunities to do this, both at home and at school.

Griffin Primary has a Breakfast Club from 8.00am each morning and a variety of lunchtime and after school activities.

The last Ofsted inspection was December 2015, the school was judged as requires improvement. Reports are available from the school website and on the Ofsted website. Since then the school has been improving rapidly.

There are existing partnerships with Hull and Scarborough Universities and the school successfully support students in each term.  There are also links with community organisations locally, Hull Sports Partnerships and Hull College.

Venn Academy Trust was formed in 2015 as a result of a strong collaborative partnership between two Headteachers, that at the time, represented four settings.

The range of Venn’s provision extends to other high quality extended services: home tuition for sick pupils, the behaviour outreach service and the Hull Royal Infirmary hospital classroom.  

From the outset Venn has promoted excellent learning behaviour for all its pupils with a core focus on fostering pupil resilience in its mainstream and specialist teaching settings; resultantly, pupils make exceptional progress irrespective of starting points.   

The research undertaken in Venn has secured success in developing a culture of positive learning behaviour that has revolutionised teaching in its schools. Venn are active participants in the regional and local Teaching School Alliances supporting other settings with learning behaviour delivery. In addition to this, the Trust has worked with a wide range of partners including universities to promote a culture of self-regulation in pupils.
