Cardiff West Community High School is seeking to appoint an inspirational, ambitious and highly effective Area Leader for Mathematics and Numeracy to join our school on a maternity-cover basis from January 2027 to January 2028.
The post is temporary to cover the maternity leave of the permanent post holder and will continue until January 2028, or the resumption/resignation of the permanent post holder, whichever is sooner.
This is an exciting opportunity for an excellent mathematics practitioner and leader who has the skills, knowledge and ambition to lead the Mathematics and Numeracy Area and make a significant contribution to improving outcomes for our pupils.
The successful candidate will have responsibility for ensuring high-quality learning, teaching and standards across Mathematics and Numeracy, leading and supporting colleagues and ensuring that pupils make strong progress across all key stages. The postholder will report to a designated member of the Senior Leadership Team and will have leadership responsibility for the Mathematics and Numeracy teams.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about mathematics education and who can combine excellent classroom practice with effective and purposeful leadership. You will have an important role in monitoring the quality of teaching and learning, leading self-evaluation and improvement planning, analysing pupil progress and ensuring that effective interventions are in place where required.
As Area Leader, you will:
• provide strong and visible leadership for Mathematics and Numeracy;
• model and promote excellent classroom practice;
• lead the monitoring, evaluation and improvement of teaching and learning across the area;
• oversee pupil progress across key stages and use assessment and data effectively to identify priorities and secure improvement;
• lead the Area Development Plan and contribute to wider whole-school improvement;
• ensure effective intervention is in place to support pupils and narrow gaps in attainment;
• lead and support colleagues through professional learning, performance management and effective quality-assurance processes;
• oversee and support the work of the Numeracy Leader and work closely with the interventions team;
• work collaboratively with senior leaders to develop and review the curriculum;
• promote high expectations for behaviour, engagement and achievement; and
contribute actively to the wider leadership, ethos and vision of the school.
