Welcome to Cockwood Primary School. Our small, rural school sits in the heart of a thriving village. From our playground we can see the Exe Estuary and beyond. There is a lovely family feel here, and the adults, pupils and parents make a great team, who work together to provide the best experiences for each other, but most importantly for our children.
There is a shared vision at Cockwood, which every adult and governor aspires to. We want our children to achieve, be kind and caring young people and respectful to each other. We create ambitious learners who love their school journey, tackle new challenges, are confident participators and who thrive on the many experiences that we provide for them.
The staff team embrace any opportunity to take the children’s learning to a new level and I am always proud of our pupils, especially when our learning goes beyond the school gates. Children here experience residential visits from Year 2, and our amazing London trip for our oldest pupils is one of the highlights of the Summer Term. Our families enjoy Sports Day on the village green and the Year 6 Pupil/Staff show at the Langstone Cliff Hotel is a wonderful celebration every July.
We are fortunate to have a Parliament Ambassador as part of the team here. We want to create passionate children, who take risks, are good communicators and who can develop a strong sense of empathy for others. We regularly visit Parliament, meet with the local MP and encourage our children to have a voice.
We have worked alongside businesses to learn how to design and plan a product, seeing great success with our very own Harbourside Chutney and Chocolate. These high quality products were made by the children using the best of local ingredients and sold extensively at our very own Cockwood Farmer’s Market – organised by the pupils and staff as part of our ongoing Enterprise Project.
Our curriculum is progressive and exciting, broad and challenging, where all subjects are valued. We offer children Forest School and a high quality sports provision as we work in partnership with both South Dartmoor and Premier Sport and Education. We provide many opportunities to sing, play musical instruments or perform on stage and we encourage our children to take on leadership roles wherever possible. They could become our new Head Boy or Girl, or perhaps take on the role of Playleader; alternatively if your child is interested in computing, they could become one of our brilliant Digital Leaders. Every child should feel excited about their school day, want to achieve their best and know the steps they need to improve even further – to be the best that they can be.
We have high expectations for our pupils and we are so proud of their achievements. This is a very special school, with a wonderful team and an amazing group of children.

At Cockwood Primary School our vision has been designed by our pupils. We have a vision which is represented through pictures where we aim to help pupils reflect on their learning and choices they make in order to become better citizens and friends to each other.
We encourage a sense of teamwork through our house system but also in everything that we do each day. Learning is a journey which poses challenges on the way, but we encourage perseverance and independence – skills much needed in everyday life. Through our creative approach to learning and within a safe an caring environment, our children grow and succeed and provide a positive contribution to our school and community.
“The leadership team has maintained the good quality education in the school since the previous inspection.
Your dedicated leadership inspires trust and confidence in the school community and engenders enthusiastic staff teamwork. Leaders have developed highly productive relationships with other schools, including enlisting support to improve the effectiveness of subject leaders. Teachers have embraced this culture of continuous improvement and welcome coaching alongside their colleagues as a professional opportunity. Consequently, staff morale is high.
The school’s caring ethos ensures that pupils are very well looked after. Pupils benefit from an engaging curriculum which promotes the good development of reading, writing and mathematical skills across all subjects.
Teachers effectively deploy support staff and this has a positive impact on pupils’ progress. Teaching assistants have a good level of subject knowledge that ensures they provide pupils with appropriate support and encouragement. Teaching assistants work especially well with groups who have special educational needs (SEN) and/or disabilities to help them make faster progress. This is particularly noticeable in the teaching of mathematics.
In 2017 pupil’s progress in writing was particularly strong, being significantly above the national average. in 2017, achievement was strong in Key Stage 1, with the proportion of pupils reaching the expected standard higher than the national figure. There was a marked rise in the proportion of children who achieved a good level of development at the end of the Reception Year to well above the national figure. This demonstrates that current pupils have a secure platform upon which to develop further.
The senior leadership team and governors have high aspirations for all pupils. Leaders have made significant improvements to the teaching of writing. Pupils have regular opportunities to write for a purpose…
The leadership team has ensured that all safeguarding arrangements are fit for purpose and records are detailed and of a high quality. Staff are well trained. They confidently use the school’s robust procedures for reporting any concerns they may have. Governors are closely involved with this element of the school’s work because they are highly committed in their role.
Pupils say that they trust staff and know what to do to keep safe, including when working online. They enjoy school and have confidence in the staff that look after them.”
