1 Purpose of Job
The Needs Assessment Senior Lecturer will lead and coordinate the assessment of students’ additional needs within the Further Education College, with a particular focus on access arrangement assessments and effective communication of student needs to teaching and support staff.
The post holder will play a central role in ensuring that eligible students receive appropriate, timely, and compliant access arrangements and support, and that teaching staff are well informed and confident in understanding and responding to learners’ individual profiles. The role supports the College’s commitment to inclusion, equality of opportunity, and learner success.
The post holder will support the Head of ALS in planning, developing and delivering professional development for curriculum and wider college staff. The role will also include associated organisational, administrative and management responsibilities.
2 Accountabilities
The duties and responsibilities of a Needs Assessment Senior Lecturer are inherently of a professional nature and are wide ranging. They include, but are not restricted to the following:-
a. Coordinate and carry out a range of needs assessments, including those for examination and assessment access arrangements, ensuring evidence is valid, current, and compliant, in line with awarding body and Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) regulations.
b. Maintain accurate and auditable records of assessments, reports, and access arrangements using College systems.
c. Advise curriculum teams in the timely development of course plans, high quality learning materials, assignments, activities and assessments for student learning.
d. Provide clear, supportive feedback to students regarding assessment outcomes and the implications for their learning. Advise students on strategies, adjustments, and support available to help them access learning effectively.
e. Communicate timely and clearly the assessment outcomes to teaching and support staff through support plans and college systems, to support curriculum and ALS teams to better understand students’ individual needs including neurodiversity, specific learning difficulties, mental health, and other barriers to learning. Act as a point of professional advice for staff on assessment evidence, differentiation, and inclusive strategies.
f. Deliver staff training, guidance, and resources related to inclusive practice, access arrangements, and reasonable adjustments.
g. Contribute to self-assessment reports, quality improvement plans, and internal or external audits related to SEND and access arrangements.
h. Be proactive in marketing/liaising with local schools, sector representatives and employers with the objective of developing and enhancing programmes of study, ensuring targeted levels of recruitment, establishing strong partnership links and raising the profile of the course(s). Ensure the accuracy and content of marketing materials.
i. Prepare for and participate in appropriate College Events (these may include Open Evenings, Parent’s Evenings, enrolment events, transition meetings).
j. Engage in professional development/research work including the conduct of and participation in staff appraisal and in-service training based on an assessment of individual needs. Contribute to the mentoring system for new staff and colleagues as appropriate.
k. Support College policies, procedures and quality assurance systems. To conduct aspects of all duties and responsibilities in line with the Corporation’s Health & Safety Policy in the interests of themselves, other colleagues and students.
l. Be familiar with Safeguarding requirements as outlined in the Safeguarding Policy and comply with its requirements to safeguard and protect the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
m. Demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm to promote the principle of equality and diversity in employment and service delivery and comply with the requirements of the Equality and Diversity Policy.
n. Be prepared to operate on a flexible basis to meet the needs of the organisation.
o. To perform such other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade of the post as required.
Generic duties
In addition to the requirements of the post above, all members of the academic staff are required to -
p. Complete all associated organisation/administrative work; preparation and marking in a timely manner.
q. Respond to student data requests.
r. Supervise students in all contexts on College premises and elsewhere when on College activities.
s. Identify, deliver where appropriate, monitor and record all aspects of additional support, in conjunction with the Additional Learning Support Team.
t. Participate in, or lead where appropriate, team/ committee meetings. This will include the completion and maintenance of minutes and appropriate records.
u. Co-ordinate the selection of students for awards.
At all times deliver a professional approach in all aspect of work, treating all staff, students and the wider college community with respect.
Training for the Needs Assessment Senior Lecturer role will be provided if required in consultation with the Head of Service for ALS.

•Ensure students know that there are staff in the College whom they can approach if they are worried
•Include opportunities in the curriculum for students to develop the skills they need to recognise and stay safe from abuse
•All staff will be required to undertake appropriate safeguarding induction and training.
