THE PE DEPARTMENT

The Facilities

The PE department is situated on the South Site and the office is housed within our state of the art, 4 badminton-court, Sports Hall. We have an ‘Astroturf’ Multi Use Games Area on site as well as a basketball play area. The North Site gymnasium is marked for basketball, volleyball, badminton and has an additional hall alongside which can be used for badminton.

In addition we make use of a number of off-site facilities including: Crystal Palace Sports Centre for Years 10 and 11 Games, and Year 12 and 13 enrichment;

There are currently 5 full time members of the department. We are also supported by additional staff with Years 10 -13 Games and Enrichment.

Curriculum

All students receive two periods of Physical Education per week. Students are taught in tutor groups and cover 5 areas of the National Curriculum recommendations. In Years 8 and 9, students follow a two year programme of work, covering 4 of the areas of the National Curriculum. In Years 10 and 11, the students are timetabled together and they choose a number of options covering traditional invasion sports such as football, basketball and netball but also allowing for the choice of football, basketball, rounders, netball, table tennis and badminton.

Key stage 4 uptake is strong, with many students opting to study PE courses. We use the Pearson exam board at GCSE. BTEC is extremely successful with 100% of students gaining at least a Pass in recent years. At Key Stage 5, we offer the level 3 BTEC sport and exercise science course and our results are outstanding with 50% of students gaining a Distinction* and 100% Distinction* or Merit.

The department has supported a number of partner primary schools to develop their practice and has been involved in sports sessions for our Primary phase classes as part of our All Through provision.

All teachers are members of a Departmental Team and members of a Year Team, either as a tutor or co-tutor. All staff are encouraged to play a full part in the life of the school in addition to the core tasks of preparation, teaching and marking.

Dunraven is keen to support all aspects of staff development, personal and professional, and has a strong staff development policy. It has had Investors in People status for many years. We have a very good track record of developing staff to move into leadership positions. Short listed candidates will be asked to teach a sample lesson.

Thank you for your interest, we look forward to receiving your application.
