Introduction
Four Stones Gateway Trust - the Lead Institution for the SHaW Maths Hub –
are looking to appoint an Assistant Maths Hub Lead (Secondary) to work as
part of the Maths Hub Leadership and Management Team. SHaW Maths Hub
is one of 40 Department for Education-designated Maths Hubs working
together as part of the national Maths Hub programme.
Maths Hubs offer professional development opportunities for anyone involved in
the teaching of maths, with the aim of driving school-wide change. All activities
are led by local school-based teachers and leaders of maths who together
form a professional learning community referred to as Local Leaders of Maths
Education (LLME).
SHaW Maths Hub works in partnership with schools and colleges to support the
continuous improvement of mathematics education for all pupils in Salop,
Herefordshire and Wolverhampton.
Role Summary
The Assistant Maths Hub Lead for Secondary plays a key role within the Maths
Hub Leadership and Management Team (MHLM Team). The purpose of this
role is to provide oversight of teaching for mastery in secondary schools
across the Maths Hub’s area, by leading, developing, and providing
expertise for this aspect of the hub’s work. The role is primarily focused on
high-quality program delivery, developing the expertise of Local Leaders of
Mathematics Education (LLMEs) and building strong partnerships with schools
and system partners to improve outcomes for pupils.
The post is funded for 80 days per academic year (2026/27). This is calculated
at 2 days a week for 40 weeks (including term-time). Please note that we will
also consider candidates who wish to be considered for 40 days per academic
year (1 day a week) and therefore split this post across two applicants.
Preferences should be clear in the letter of application. The applicant’s school
will be fully funded for the release time associated with this secondment with
an SLA in place between the school and the SHaW Hub (paid at £400 a
day). This post is also available to ‘independent’ candidates on an SLA
basis.
Key Responsibilities

Working with Schools:
• Working with school leaders to ensure sustained participation in the
Maths Hub offer
• Working with the MHL to recruit and retain WG schools
• Supporting Local Leaders of Mathematics Education (LLMEs):
Facilitate an online community to support LLMEs involved in
Primary-focused programmes, including sharing updates and
encouraging professional dialogue
Identify and nurture potential future LLMEs with strong maths expertise
Supporting Mastery Specialists during the development
years of their programme (Years 1 and 2) including
reviewing gap tasks, completion of the PD Lead accreditation
and developing strategies for developing their own
department.
• Oversee Maths Hub programmes related to the secondary phase
Working with System Partners:
• Work closely with the NCETM team to ensure timely and effective two-way
communication, providing support and challenge in relation to the Maths hub
offer
• Build and sustain relationships with system partners, attending relevant
forums and exploring collaborative opportunities
Contributing to the Maths Hub Leadership and Management Team:
• Maintain effective communication with the MHLM Team, including attending
relevant meetings and contributing to planning, evaluation and training
• Work with the MHLM team to plan how the hub addresses the strategic
goal for secondary schools
This role presents an exciting opportunity to shape mathematics provision
across the region and to play a central role in strengthening teaching and
outcomes for pupils.
Essential Criteria
Applicants should:
• Have current or very recent (within the last two years) experience teaching
in a secondary classroom
• Have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
• Demonstrate strong subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding
in mathematics, alongside a commitment to ongoing professional learning
• Have experience of leading and implementing changes within their own
school
• Be familiar with the Maths Hub secondary programmes and workgroups
• Have strong communication and facilitation / presentation skills
• Willingness to work collaboratively across schools
Desirable Criteria
It would be advantageous to:
• Hold a primary teaching or leadership post within the SHaW
Maths Hub region
• Hold the Secondary Mastery Specialist accreditation
• Hold PD Lead accreditation
• Have experience of leading professional development in secondary settings
• Have experience of leading and implementing changes in schools other
than your own
• Hold accreditation as a School Development Lead, or be willing to gain
accreditation

After shortlisting, selected applicants in the first round will be invited to an online
interview on Friday 19th June - these will be scheduled in the afternoon. Following this, a
second round of shortlisting will take place, and successful candidates will be invited to
teach a short maths lesson on Monday 22nd June.
