Overview

Heatherbrook_75.jpg

We refer to ourselves as Team Heatherbrook and this team spirit underpins everything we do as we work to educate, support and inspire our children. Our teachers and support staff all act as exemplary role models, educating and nurturing each child enabling them to become capable, caring and confident human beings.

Pupils are supportive of each other and their positive behaviour, both in and out of lessons, is a strong feature of our school. Our pupils develop empathy and compassion alongside respect for themselves and others. We believe in high quality pastoral care and work closely with families to support pupils' emotional development, also teaching mindfulness throughout the school to develop pupils' resilience, well-being and mental health.

Heatherbrook is an inclusive school and we embrace and celebrate our diversity. We are proud that our pupil group is so diverse, with children from a range of backgrounds, including many different nationalities, a higher than average number of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities and pupils who do not speak English as their mother-tongue. We enjoy, and are grateful for, the loyalty and support of our families who play a vital part in our continued drive to achieve the very best.

About Us

We promote a supportive and caring environment here at Heatherbook - this is a place where people matter and I am very proud of the tradition the school has for taking care of and supporting children as they learn and develop. We give pupils a voice and we ensure those voices are heard. At Heatherbrook Primary Academy we have high expectations of pupils' behaviour and through the development of supportive relationships we enable pupils to be polite, confident and ready to make a positive contribution to the school community and beyond.

The atmosphere at Heatherbrook is a happy one in which staff and parents work together for the welfare of the children, and where children adopt exemplary standards of behaviour and values to develop a sense of self-awareness and an acceptance of responsibility for their actions.

We want everybody who comes into school to be aware of the high standard we set, the 'this is how we do it here' mantra. We teach children about 'The Heatherbrook Way' of behaving and what it means. Every adult and child in the school is expected to model this behaviour at all times.

Many of our families enjoy coming into school for 'Family Fridays' when they can spend time in the classroom with their children to share reading books, maths games or craft activities. We offer various workshops throughout the school year so parents and carers are well-informed and fully understand how they can best support their children's learning at home.

Education at our Heart

Heatherbrook_1015.jpg

At Heatherbrook Primary Academy, there are no limits to how high we aim. We want our children to be amazed by the world around them, to become curious, to ask incredible questions and get incredible answers, to be problem solvers, thinkers, dreamers and doers and leave our school knowing that anything is possible if they have aspiration and work hard to achieve their goals.

Our curriculum is inspiring, exciting and, importantly, gives the children access to experiences they would not otherwise have, both inside and outside the classroom. Four pillars underpin our curriculum -Aspiration, Diversity, Innovation and Activism. Our children approach their learning in history, geography, art and through the eyes of an expert and they become teachers, doctors, lawyers and engineers. Each project follows set themes which 'open their eyes' to the opportunities the children may have in the future, stimulating excitement and enthusiasm along the way. The taught curriculum is enhanced through educational visits and a range of visitors in to school including archers, scuba divers, engineers and doctors. Years 5 and 6 visit the Houses of Parliament and take part in a debate on current issues. We have recently visited the Sea Life Centre, ta ken the whole school to the pantomime, visited the seaside and taken part in Orchestra Unwrapped at De Montfort Hall, all in order to enrich and deepen the children's learning experiences.

Our curriculum reflects and celebrates the diversity of our local community and that of the wider world. Through the acquisition of knowledge and the development of skills we prepare children well for the next stage in their education. By promoting and love of learning and of being challenged, we encourage children to find innovative ways to solve problems. We encourage children to ask questions and to debate big ideas -we want our children to have the understanding they need to keep themselves and others safe and healthy, both physically and mentally, and to find ways to improve the world in the future.
