Welcome

Welcome

I would like to warmly welcome you to Horton CE VA Primary School.

We are a small, rural school in an idyllic setting just outside Chipping Sodbury. At our school every child is treated as an individual and their strengths are recognised and valued by all. The children benefit enormously from the small class sizes and the level of adult support within the school. It is important to us that every child meets their potential and is well equipped both academically and socially for their move to secondary school.

Horton Primary School has a strong sense of community, and parents and visitors are always welcome. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or, better still, come and pay us a visit. We would be delighted to show you around.

Horton School is a Church of England Voluntary Aided School. It was built in 1859 by the Church of England.

The school has been modernised three times, once with the addition of a new classroom in 1981, then in 1998 to provide a library, an office for the head and the secretary, a staff room and a staff resources room, and more recently, updating toilets and entrance area.

The school boasts a high teacher/child ratio in 3 classrooms. There is a separate library and a learning area for quiet or group working. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard, a bank of wireless laptops and tablets. The school has a small playground where netball matches take place, an adventure playground, a quiet area, a conservation area, an amphitheatre used as an outside classroom, and picturesque surroundings. It has the use of the village hall for sports and other activities.

School Values

Our Ethos

Horton Church of England Primary School will preserve and develop its religious character in accordance with the principles of the Church of England.

In partnership with the wider school community we seek to provide an education of the highest quality, underpinned by Christian belief and practice. It encourages an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith and promotes Christian values such as compassion, forgiveness and honesty.

As a school community we strive to promote respect for each other and the wider world. We aim to foster resilience and independence in our young people so that they are fully equipped to take on life’s challenges.

The children’s happiness is at the heart of all we do as we strive to ensure children meet their full potential.

Our vision

Our vision at Horton School is that everyone knows that they are loved by God and learns all that they need to flourish, contributing to the good of others in the school community and the wider world.

I am come that they might have life and have it to the full– John 10.10

Love your neighbour as yourself -Mark 12,31

We aim to make this vision a reality by:

An inspiring curriculum.

Our intention is to educate for wisdom, knowledge and skills through an inspiring curriculum so that each child can stretch themselves spiritually, morally, intellectually, imaginatively and actively to develop a lifelong love of learning.

Living out Christian values

Horton school values are rooted in the life and teaching of Jesus Christ and we seek to demonstrate an ethos of living well together, embodying the centrality of relationships in love, compassion, generosity, truth telling and forgiveness. Jesus gives us a vision of life as part of the family of God and we aspire to help each child find joy, happiness and acceptance in our school so that each child may know they are a blessing to the school community.

Learning to live as part of the wider community

We encourage hope in God’s future for the world and through our global citizenship curriculum help children to realise their responsibilities locally, nationally and globally and to develop an increasing awareness of how to create a more healthy, sustainable and just world. We work in partnership with parents and the local church. The charities with whom we are linked support the priorities of our vision.

Valuing Self and Others

At Horton school we educate for dignity and respect. We are learning to offer our gifts and talents freely for the good of all so that we can make a difference to our school, our community and the wider world. Our commitment to the ultimate worth of each child is informed by the belief that each person is loved and valued by God. We emphasise sharing our experiences and supporting each other through listening and caring.
