Our School

A warm welcome to the website of Thornton Primary School. We are a small primary school in Leicestershire for pupils aged 4 to 11 years. We are a founding Academy of the Symphony Learning Trust and work in close partnership with other schools within the Trust.

As a small village primary school we know each pupil as an individual. Our ethos is based on support, challenge and encouragement in which we have high expectations of all our children. We encourage care and respect for other people, their faiths and traditions. We help children develop lively enquiring minds to make decisions which affect their future and to understand other people's points of view.

We have a professional, dedicated and caring whole staff team and we believe is that we can make most improvement by working together.

About Us

TNT-E24-11347-sm.jpg

We believe it is important that parents, teachers and governors work together to ensure that the children in our care receive the best possible education and reach their full potential. There are many occasions when parents are invited to come to school but we also welcome informal visits and parental help in school. We are always pleased to discuss any matter concerning the school.

We are proud of the happy and caring atmosphere of our village school and the quality of learning which occurs. The experienced and dedicated staff seek to promote the academic, spiritual, physical and emotional development of the children in order to prepare them for the future stages of their education and all the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

The school has gone through a significant period of change since September 2015. The Leadership Team was replaced with a new structure and the school entered the Symphony Learning Trust (Multi-Academy Trust) in order to provide the school to school support to secure its future. Up until recently the school was lead by the Executive Head teacher from Newcroft Primary Academy (and outstanding School in Shepshed) and a Head of School for day to day management. The hard work was rewarded with a Good Ofsted rating in March 2023. Thornton now has a more traditional leadership structure of Headteacher and its own leadership team.

We are focused on high expectations and hard work from staff and pupils alike and, above all, we want children to enjoy coming to school in Thornton.

What Makes Us Unique

Location

We are incredibly fortunate to have Thornton Reservoir within walking distance of our school. Regular outings to the reservoir and the surrounding area enhance their understanding of the environment, stimulate curiosity and foster a love of the outdoors and nature. Moreover, outdoor activities promote physical health and well-being, offering a break from classroom routines. By exploring the local area and our school ground nature areas, children also develop observational and investigative skills, which are crucial for their overall cognitive development.

Enrichment Opportunities

We pride ourselves on developing a wide range of enrichment activities to both supplement and further enhance the curriculum. These can be experience and theme days throughout the school, special visitors and also opportunities to go on exciting trips and residential visits. Our yearly destinations include day trips to Stonehurst Farm in Reception, Year 1 and 2 outdoor learning at Bosworth Park, Year 3 and 4 Richard III Museum and Viking experience day, Year 5 WWII experience day, Year 6 Warning Zone, Theatre and Team Building Day at Beaumanor Hall. We also arrange two exciting residential visits to Beaumanor Hall in Year 1 and 2 and in Years 4 and 5, where the children get the opportunity to experience more varied outdoor and adventurous activities such as archery, wall climbing and canoeing.

Encompassing Creativity

Art, design, drama, dance and music complement many of our curriculum areas. Alongside our Art and Design curriculum, where pupils learn to use a range of materials, techniques, and the study of different artists, pupils also get the opportunity to celebrate their work through exciting displays throughout the school and also their work being exhibited in exhibitions, festivals and competitions. We are very proud of our exhibited work throughout the school and the vibrant and stimulating learning environment we have created.
