Secondment Opportunity

Start date: 1st September 2026

Dear Prospective Applicant

Thank you for your interest in the secondment for Languages Curriculum Leader and Teacher of Welsh. This is an important position for Abersychan School, as we aim to improve the quality of provision and standards in Welsh. The Languages Department consists of strong teachers and requires strong leadership to cover a period of maternity, and to secure good outcomes for students. The Assistant Headteacher Pedagogy is passionate about embedding the Siarter Iaith Cymraeg Campus and the successful candidate will work closely with the Assistant Headteacher to raise the profile of Welsh within the school community. Applicants will require approval from your current Headteacher, before applying for this position.

Abersychan School is an 11-16 comprehensive school which ensures that children of all abilities fulfil their potential. We are a school that is committed to ensuring that all our young people are happy, successful and ready for their lives beyond school. Our expectations and standards are high. We have a committed and caring staff who are dedicated to ensuring that each child achieves their personal best. The school currently has 723 students, 47 teachers and 45 members of support staff. The school serves an area of socio-economic disadvantage and 30% of students are entitled to free school meals.

The school’s aims are delivered through a strong pastoral system, a commitment to providing high quality learning experiences and an extensive range of sporting, cultural, musical and extra-curricular activities. Students are happy, hard-working and positive about the school. They genuinely are an asset to our community and are incredibly friendly. We have fantastic parents and governors who are very supportive in helping us ensure that each student receives the very best education. The school has been widely commended for making significant improvements to behaviour management and we are striving to secure the highest standards through an outstanding provision.

The staff body at Abersychan School are a hardworking and dynamic team, with a shared vision that all students experience the highest quality teaching and learning to achieve their best. The school is well resourced with digital teaching resources, including interactive whiteboards, visualisers and Chromebooks. Provision for the development of students’ skills is bolstered by strong leadership, a coherent curriculum model and a strong strategic plan.

We are looking for an exceptional person who has the energy, drive, resilience and commitment to join us at this crucial time in our improvement journey. If you are excited by the prospect of playing a significant role in realising the school’s ambitions, have an unrelenting belief that all students can achieve, regardless of background and ability, then we would love to hear from you! In return, I personally guarantee you the very best level of support.

Please do not hesitate to contact Rhodri Thomas should you wish to receive further information regarding this role or to arrange a visit.
