Overview

Cefn Hengoed Community School was opened in 1968 to serve its community on the eastside of Swansea. Our catchment stretches in a narrow ribbon from the restored SA1 Port Tennant and St Thomas area, looking out over the Bay and docks, up through Pentrechwyth, Bonymaen, Winch Wen, Trallwn and into Talycopa. Our school was refurbished, transformed into a 21st Century School in 2012 and is now in its 4th year as a beautiful, modern learning environment. We are high on the hill in Bonymaen/Winch Wen with stunning views across the Lower Swansea Valley, looking down onto the Liberty Stadium, home to Ospreys Rugby and Swansea City Football Club which mean so much to all of us in our school community and with whom our school has great links. We have an unique, collaborative relationship with our cluster primaries with whom we have focused on developing our learners' Literacy and Numeracy and through working together closely, via Cluster PLCs established since 2009 and a standard approach to developing Literacy and Numeracy, together we have transformed the reading ages of learners in our community. This in turn has increased the access to all learners to the curriculum and has been central to our improvement. In October 2015, our school was inspected by Estyn. Hard work and a sound journey of improvement driven by fantastic staff, great pupils and wonderful family and community support resulted in an outcome of 15 straight Excellent judgements; at the time only the 4th secondary school in Wales to do so since the 2009 Common Inspection Framework began. This success has over time brought many visitors to the school to examine and share our practice and the school is also a New Deal Pioneer School, a Challenge Cymru Advisory School, a Lead Creative School and most recently an ERW Lead School in History, Religious Education and Business Studies. Along our improvement journey our staff have invested in outstanding CPD which has shared leadership and extended the impact of our middle leaders. Our Extended Leadership Team supports our small Leadership Team to ensure our progress continues for the benefit of our learners. About Us

Cefn Hengoed Community School strives to offer a quality education to each and every pupil. Our learners thrive with us and pupil numbers allow us to provide both a broad and balanced curriculum based on equality of opportunity and a personal touch where learners are known individually by the staff. This defines us and is the basis from which our improvement journey is derived. As a school we are naturally proud of our academic tradition. Examination results continue to show year on year improvement at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 and we match or exceed local authority, regional and national indicators for many measures even though our context places us in Group E and we are the 12th most deprived school in Wales. In addition to academic success, the school has an exceptionally strong reputation for the wellbeing of our learners. We firmly believe that our learners flourish in a safe and caring environment. Our ethos is focused on building our learners' self esteem and self confidence. The school offers a wide range of extra curricular activities at lunchtime, after school and in holiday time ranging from Sport to Music and Drama. These opportunities allow pupils to make the most of their time at Cefn Hengoed. Our staff offer a variety of enhancement opportunities through trips and visits, many of which are at no cost to pupils but extend to skiing trips, Languages and History trips to France and a biennial trip to New York and Washington. The school's mission statement "If you believe it, you can achieve it" reflects our confidence in our learners to realise their potential and it is our aim to ensure that each learner's experience is happy and memorable.
